A true-ish story, written by Captain Frederick Burnaby, adventurer, traveler, soldier, who was catapulted to instant fame with this recounting of his journey to Khiva in 1875. The author was wounded and eventually died in the service of the British empire when it and the Russian empire both sought control of Central Asia. This story of the opposing superpowers rings with authenticity. Its backdrop is the impending Russian invasion of India. A fascinating book and an instant classic in its day for the way it brought this conflict to life through the eyes of a narrator who seem a daredevil to some and an exemplary patriot to others. You'll want to own this one and read it more than once.
I found A Ride to Khiva: Travels and Adventures in Central Asia fascinating. I was quite entertained by his camel ride. You won't want to miss Captain Burnaby's journey. Well–written and perfect for history buffs, I enjoyed it.
