I like stories that are difficult to “put in a box” or standard categories. The author’s blend of suspense, speculative fiction, and family is what I love about this series. This third volume, “When Evil Chooses You,” is the perfect culmination to the story that began with “Knuckleheads.”
Even with the magic realism aspect, the story has details that make it seem a natural part of our real world. There were bits to which I related when I remember going back to my childhood home after an absence of about five years, and saw how much had changed – like “They’ve finished a few highways since you last lived here.”
One of my favorites included this: “You know, for a retired history teacher, you catch onto this cloak and dagger stuff pretty quickly. Mike shook his head. “The history of this country is one long continuous stream of cloak and dagger stuff.”
While “Knuckleheads” is a prequel to the other two novels, I do recommend beginning there and reading all three in order. You won’t want to miss anything these characters do, or any of the trouble they find. And by the way, Zach is in quite a predicament, so don’t miss this one.
