Productbeschrijving

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare of a Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon.

The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her love life.

She may have to live in their world, but she doesn’t have to play by their rules.

3.0 van 5 sterren Shockingly, rooting for Jaxon. 27 augustus 2016

After waiting a really long time for this third installment to be release, I have to say that I was a bit taken back and disappointed in how it turned out, so I am just going to speak passionately and throw this out there, I am rooting for Jaxon. I may understand why Bryn will end up with Valmont in the long-run, with him being her personal knight and all, and for the simple fact that most girls’ dream and fantasize about being swept away by a knight in “shining armor”, but I just don't buy this storyline, so I couldn’t cheer for Valmont. This is partially due to the fact that I loved the first and second book in the series and saw a fiercer connection between Bryn and Jaxon then her and Valmont. In nature, we tend to fight the most with the ones we love the most. From the first book I saw this connection between Bryn and Jaxon and enjoyed and admired the fighting and teasing between them. I like Jaxon’s character. He maybe rude and bad-tempered, but he is also honest and shows in his own way that he can care and change. Valmont is great and all, he is the ideal male role due to him being "Mr. perfect", but I don't feel the connection. Furthermore, I did not like the fact that while reading, I felt claustrophobic from Bryn and Valmont relationship. He follows her around like a puppy dog. I understand why he had to guard her, but they were always together and that's not healthy for any relationship. He went from being her bodyguard and friend to her romantic interest quickly due to the dragon-knight bond. And that also added to reason why I don’t think they should end up together romantically. Additionally, why does a dragon need a knight to defend them? I’ve read plenty of shifter books and dragons are usually one of the biggest, meanest, and toughest creatures in the stories. Why give the heroine of the story, who's a dragon, a knight to protect her? This makes me think of her as a damsel in distress rather then the hero.

Bryn's character is a 16 years old teenager, but I feel that she can mature more and prioritize what's important. For instance, why is she so worried that Valmont hasn't been kissing her on the lips instead of trying to figure out who is trying to kill her. There are so many other instances that fell short, but it will be too much to list.

All in all, I have to end this on a positive note. I love the going down in flames series, but I did not agree with the romantic plot of this book. I am restlessly awaiting for a better outcome in the fourth installment.

So when I started this series way back when, I loved it. Now reading the third book in the series I still feel the same way. This book has more dragons, more knights, and more angsty Jaxson. I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I knew that I was going to like it, but I was unaware that I was going to not want to go to sleep (I did) while I was in the middle of reading it. I was also unaware that my kindle was dangerously close to dying (it did). When I woke up this morning, even before my coffee had stopped brewing, I started reading it again. Granted, I did have to go back and re-read what my non-caffeinated brain had read. As I sat there reading Trial By Fire, I felt like I was there. I felt like I was watching everything first hand. The mystery that is in Trial By Fire keeps you guessing on what is going on. There is magic in this book, and Chris Cannon has captured it!

I love reading what Chris puts out. She writes like she has been writing for years. She has a fan for life from me! I hope that you read all of this series!! You will not be disappointed at all!!!

The series is well written but occasionally has annoying spouts of self doubt that at times can be mind numbing. However on top of the obvious intrigue, romance and angst in the current crisis, there is an underlying subtle emotional maturity growing with Bryn and Jaxon in the series. These two have a first meeting which seems promising (yes you must remember their initial first attraction) until Jaxon learns Bryn's identity. After that, well they live to antagonize each other. Rhianna and Jaxon have been set to an arranged marriage neither of them are crazy about until suddenly an injury makes Rhianna ineligible. Jaxon's protective instincts prove to attach to Rhianna whom has few other alternatives for her future. It is not surprising this attachment develops but there is subtle hints that their feelings may not be the kind each one wants long-term.
Rhianna is a likeable character and I hope her longtime affiliation with Jaxon proves her first impression of him in a relationship is ultimately what is real and to expect more is an injustice to her heart. She deserves happiness and not the sympathetic possessive protection that Jaxon seems to offer.
Bryn is a strong character that is learning her nature as a dragon as well as struggling between cultures and family while constantly under attack from many foes. She is desperate to have " someone " to call home and not feel as an outcast. This emotional insecurity lets her get in relationships that have underlying negative connotations that she blatantly ignores so she can stay safe in an imaginary world. Her not quite strong enough romance with Zavien is naive but more real then one seemingly enhanced with a bond with Valmont. Valmont is a likeable character and is suspiciously astute when he observes interactions between Bryn and Jaxon. I can only hope that he is released from his bond someday to find happiness or at least prove its influence.
I don't know how Bryn and Jaxon will come to be, but there will be personal growth and lots of pain to get there before they do.
And to make one observation...if restrictions on marriage within clans are lifted, will this mean Zevian might try a second chance with Bryn?

Thoughts: Pretty sure I’m going to go through withdrawals, this series is so good! The story moves along so quickly that you don’t even realize that half the book has been read. And it’s so hard to put down that everything else around you just disappears. Part of me wants to read it again just so I don’t have to miss the characters. This has elements of Divergent with the classes, their jobs, and no mixing. There’s also an element of Harry Potter with all the mysteries that Bryn tries to solve, a bit of the magic, and the school just for dragons. I am anxiously waiting for the next book and recommend this to anyone that likes a snarky main character who stands up for what she believes in and won’t let anyone push her around. Kudos Ms. Cannon for creating such a wonderful story that makes me crave more.

bran's start to the new semester at school doesn't start off as planned when someone tries to kill her again.

The bond between her and her knight Valmont become stronger. Bryn and Valmont try to figure out more on how the bond between them works.

Bryn, Valmont, Clint, and Ivy try to figure out more about the banned books and where the directorate is keeping them hidden and why.

Things come together when the group figures out the meaning of the banned books, and just when things calm down another threat to the school happens.

Chris cannon makes you feel like your fully there with Bryn. you can easily picture everything that's going on. your always guessing what is going to happen next. Never easy to figure out whats going to happen next.

My own thoughts on the book. I feel this book was rushed and not given the time that should of made this book better. I think it fell a little flat where it should of been way more epic like Chris cannon's work is. How ever I still fully enjoyed being back into this world and the characters!!!!

Also Clint and Ivy need there own story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
