Alexandra Butcher's Tales of Erana: The Warrior's Curse. Butcher soars to new heights in this tale within a tale. The adventurers, a cave, and the mysterious Past Seer capture our imagination and won't let go. The author's style, at times experimental, keeps everything fresh and evocative as tropes are upended and imaginations first teased, then satisfied.

Butcher's ear for dialog is sharp through this gritty, classic story: an ancient treasure,a beautiful maiden, a king whose kingdom lies at risk to a besieging monster... and a warrior who'll dare any peril to win the hand of the king's daughter.

Enter the Past Seer and her Second Sight. . . . In a cave lies a treasure these adventures should not steal. -- including a horn that's irresistible...

That's all I'll tell you. This story has twists and turns and wonders in store...

This short story is a fantasy along the lines of Beowulf. It is told traditional language that is quite appropriate. The way it ends shows expert story writing.

5.0 van 5 sterren WHEN YOU SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL, ALWAYS COUNT YOUR FINGERS AFTERWARDS 14 december 2014
door Joe Bonadonna - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
Full disclosure: I read and commented on this fine short story before its publication, and I have an "honorable mention" inside its covers. This is a gritty, yet classic story within a story. The main plot, which takes up the middle half of this story, is concerned with an ancient treasure, a comely witch, a king at wit's end while a terrible monster lays siege to his realm, and the warrior who risks all to win the hand of the king's daughter. While it may seem reminiscent of Beowulf, don't let it fool you, for this one makes a surprise turn into unexpected territory. Remember: I said it's "a story within a story." And indeed it is. The story opens with a band of adventures who come upon a cave filled with a lost treasure. But one among them has a sort of "second sight," and is called a Past Seer . . . for she can sometimes see into the past. What triggers her vision in part one of this tale is a strange and priceless horn, and then we return to the past, to the main storyline about the aforementioned ancient king and the monster who plagues his kingdom. A few more twists and turns will catch you off guard before we return to the fourth and final part of this yarn, back with the adventurers in the cave, the treasure they seek to steal, and most especially that strange horn. When the Past Seer tells her mates that they should leave without taking anything, and they refuse, she has no choice but part company with them, for she knows all too well what is coming. And then, when one of the adventurers takes the horn and is the first to leave the cave after the departure of the Seer, he encounters a comely woman who offers him a bargain, and blindly he accepts . . . only to discover the nature of an ancient curse, and how the past can twist itself like a serpent and come around to bite those in the present. A fun tale well told, and a fitting addition to the Alex Butcher's popular Tales of Erana.
