I awaken in a laboratory.
I don’t know who I am.
I’m inexplicably drawn to the doctor who cares for me. She tells me I’ve been altered, that I’m stronger and faster, that I’ll be a key component in a war between corporations. She says I volunteered for this. She says I volunteered to be transformed, but I have no way of knowing if what she says is true.
Something isn’t right. My memories have been taken, wiped clean, but dreams begin to slip into my conscious mind. I can’t let anyone know when that happens, or they’ll remove my memories again. Somewhere inside of me, I know I need to remember something important.
I’m fighting a war I don’t understand, and the one woman I rely on can’t be trusted.

5.0 van 5 sterren STEN rates at the top of the Alpha male list! 25 februari 2016

As always Shay writes an alpha male like no else! Just when you think she has given you her number 1 guy she brings a new character to life. In Specimen take her alpha male, up it to the maximum level, set up a bad ass storyline, and add just enough hot, steamy, romance.....well now you have the perfect Savage book! I fell head over heels with STEN, a super soldier, trying to find out who is and what brought him to this existence. His nurse tells him one thing but his instincts tell him something else. You will stay up all night on this one...I couldn't get enough and the ending....let me just say Phenomenal!

This is definitely not what I expected this book to be. As per usual the sex scenes are phenomenal and there was tons of action. What he thought he was and who he actually is are they one in the same? Find out by getting your copy today. I didn't care too much for the end because to me it would be a whole recycling thing, but.... If you use your imagination you can come up ways how he gets both of them out of their situation and stays alive doing it. Well.. It would be win win ;-)

5.0 van 5 sterren Action packed and intensely intimate. Shay delivers another five star read! 24 februari 2016

Shay Savage does it again. She takes this reader out of her comfort zone of romance reading and it results in this reader being taken on one h*lluva ride!

Specimen begins as STEN awakes in a lab. He has no memory of who he was before he became a specimen, a super soldier with no name, but just a number. But he does feel a familiar pull to the woman standing in front of him. Dr. Riley Grace.

As Sten undergoes further testing, treatments and training, the pull he feels toward Riley is overpowering. A pull that is nothing of chance but everything of an engineered reaction. But as Sten starts to grasp a hold of pieces of his past he finds that he can't fully trust the bond he’s formed with his doctor. But nothing is as it appears and it will take Sten and Riley taking some risky chances to find out the truth.

I can’t remember the last time that I read a book and then sat there and re-read the epilogue over and over again. I am not sure if I was looking for a different ending or just wanting to absorb every bit of information – but I just could not stop myself. After finishing this book and knowing how it ends, it made me want to start all over again!

Not only does Shay deliver a fantastic alpha male – but she gave us one on steroids. Genetically altered to be possessive, aggressive, sexual and protective of his Riley. I could not get enough of him. And he could not get enough of Riley.

I loved that I fell in love with this story.
I loved that I was transplanted into this sort of post-apocalyptic world and not once did this not feel like it was going to be an epic romance.

I am not a sci-fi reader. I hadn’t even watched Star Wars until a few years ago – so this would generally be a genre that I’d say was not for me. That is until Shay came along and turned that on its head.

Solid writing. A fantastic set up to a complex storyline that was still easy to follow. Action packed and intensely intimate. The scenes when Riley was able to let go were powerful, the way these two came together sexually was primal and gritty.

Another stellar job by Shay Savage, the queen of the Male POV! You need to read this. You need to pick this up. I can’t stop thinking about the way this story ended. I have a feeling that months to come when I finally get to meet Shay at a signing, I’m going to need to talk to her about this book and that darn epilogue!

1.0 van 5 sterren Profoundly, viscerally disappointing 4 maart 2016

I never thought I would write a negative review of Shay Savage's work, but here I am after finishing "Specimen." I've been following her work - and loving it - since she was writing free fanfiction. When she began writing professionally, I had no regrets about paying for her excellent work, until this book. Fair warning - SPOILERS AHEAD IN THIS REVIEW.

While the story was incredibly well-crafted, as all Savage's work is, with this book Savage committed what I consider to be an unforgivable writing sin - she created an ending that might have satisfied her, but was profoundly unsatisfying for the reader. From the characterizations of the hero and heroine, the world-building, fast-paced plot and scorching love scenes, everything else about this book was as exceptional as I expect from Savage.

I felt deeply betrayed by the ending of this story. If you always need an HEA ending, this isn't the book for you. I actually can live with, and even love, a book that doesn't give the characters their HEA, if it makes sense within the story. This ending did not. Throughout the book, Savage makes you believe Galen and Riley will get their HEA ... and then she rips it away from them. The ending was so painfully not right for this book and these characters that I just couldn't believe that's where it was all heading.

Even when my Kindle e-reader was showing me that there was only about 10 percent more of the book to go, I kept believing Savage would salvage the story with some amazing twist. Or at least leave it open-ended to continue in a second book that would lead to the HEA I craved. Instead, what I got was an ending that utterly negated the struggle of both main characters and honestly felt like something she slapped onto the book because she got too bored (or felt it was getting too long) to come up with any better ending that would give the characters the ending they (and the reader) deserved. I'd think that was just my perception, but the author's note Savage added at the end of the book to explain/justify what she'd written tells me she KNEW this ending fell short.

I so loved everything else about this book (as I've loved everything she's done before) that the ending felt like a betrayal on a visceral level. I can't say I'll never read another book by Shay Savage, but I think it will take me a long time to recover from the profound disappointment of this book.
