Warlord, ‘General’ Jimmy September believes he is a great soldier and teacher, destined to lead his people to a better future. In order to fund an upcoming war, he kidnaps five multi-national aid workers from a refugee camp in West Africa.
When the governments of the nationals involved refuse to pay a ransom, Mark Samuel, finance director and father to one of the hostages, misappropriates three million sterling of company funds to secure his son’s release.
As he battles his way through a hostile environment and unhelpful officialdom, struggling to hold on to the money long enough to save his son, Mark Samuel discovers a reason to succeed more important than securing his own future.

3.0 van 5 sterren Eye opening look into brutal Africa 26 april 2014
door Kathryn svendsen - Gepubliceerd op
A self-proclaimed great leader, Jimmy September kidnaps 5 workers from a refugee camp in order to raise funds through ransom in this suspenseful novel, The Seventeen Commandments of Jimmy September. Mark Samuel, the father of one of the victims, steals his company’s funds to rescue his son when the governments of the victims refuse to pay a ransom.

Mark Samuels venture into Africa starts out as a mission to rescue his son, but become something more as his journey teaches him about himself and his son and the other hostages. This book is an eye-opening look into a world filled with danger at every turn. A world in which children carry guns. A world where life is not highly valued. While this book is fiction, places like this do exist.

I found the pacing in The Seventeen Commandments to be uneven. At times it was fast-paced and captivating, and other times it was much slower-paced and less intriguing. Sometimes it felt like the book was too long. I did think that there were a few good twists to the plot and I applaud the protagonist for the good choices that he made. It’s just too bad he had to carry out the bad choices to achieve the good ones.

This novel was fairly clean in romantic content. There were a couple of bedroom scenes but no graphic descriptions. The language was also pretty clean when it came to profanity.

Overall I would say that I enjoyed this novel. I gave it 3 stars out of 5.

Thank you to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion was not required. All thoughts are my own.

5.0 van 5 sterren A well crafted & elegantly written kidnapping thriller. 11 januari 2015
door Willy Eckerslike - Gepubliceerd op
irstly, thanks to the author for providing a free copy in return for an honest review. The core subject matter is instinctively offensive, focussing as it does on the erratic brutality of an African leader, where deeply ingrained tribal violence seems to immure such men from any recognisable humanity. That, from the outset, makes this a difficult novel to pick up, as for many readers reading is an enjoyable and relaxing escape from reality.

However, I’m glad to say that Wilsher’s skilful plot construction and masterly control of the written word rapidly draws the reader deep into the vicious kidnapping plot and the ghastly world of the eponymous madman. What could easily have followed was a by-the-numbers kidnap thriller, especially when the action leaves Africa to focus upon the attempts of the father of one of the victims to secure the release of his son, risking his livelihood and freedom in the process. There are a few places where the pace is a bit uneven, perhaps to give the reader a chance to take a breath, but at no time did I feel the need to skip-read.

It is a relatively rare occurrence to see a well crafted & elegantly written novel arise from the self-publishing circuit and it is a testament to the ability & tenacity of the author that this splendid novel stands head and shoulders above the morass of self-aggrandising vanity publishing. I wish him every success in the future and look forward to his next full length novel.
