A Peril in the Vines: A Medium’s Peril Book 3 (A Medium's Peril) (English Edition) Kindle-editie
.
Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene’s 1920s paranormal series, A Medium’s Peril continues with the novella, A Peril in the Vines. In the quaint village of Joumou Hills, not too far from New Orleans, Daphne, Clover, and Phineas encounter a chilling mystery. There, Daphne believes she will also find the answer to a gruesome vision she had in New Orleans. At a lavish party, a historian describes a massacre that matches her vision. Did a young girl cause such devastation? At their cottage, vines move of their own accord. A handsome but intense doctor may be up to no good. Does evil lurk in darkness? Does it come as a shining light? Or is it hidden in the vines?

Colleen M. ChesebroBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 28 mei 20255,0 van 5 sterren Magical characters, Romani myths & legends, An exciting paranormal read!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopDaphne Moultre, a medium, and her assistant, Clover, along with their friend, Phineas, embark on another adventure set in the 1920s.
Daphne has been receiving visions of a massacre, which highlights the terrifying Armenian Genocide that happened in the mid-1920s. Somehow, this vision involves pumpkins and vines that appear to cover the small town of Joumou Hills, Louisiana.
There is a mystery to solve when they meet a young girl, Lousaper, and the doctor who is her caretaker. The girl has no recollection of the events, but the greedy gleam in the doctor’s eye alerts the team that all is not right with this story. Daphne decides she must discover the truth to help Lousaper.
This is a fun and creative read filled with interesting characters, along with pumpkins and vines that move in bizarre ways. The story is full of Romani myths and legends.
If you enjoy paranormal reads, you will enjoy this book and the series!

MacTrishBeoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 26 januari 20255,0 van 5 sterren A tale to raise the goosebumps
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI’ve enjoyed all three of the stories about the medium Daphne Moultrie and her friends and I think this, the third, is the best yet.
Daphne, her young assistant Clover and photographer friend Phinny, travel to Joumou Hills, arriving in time for the pumpkin festival. They are introduced to a young girl connected to an inexplicable event about ten years beforehand, in 1914, when she and her fellow Armenians came under attack by Turks set on genocide.
A doctor invites Daphne to witness the girl he puts into a trance and soon all of them are in danger of their lives. There are light touches, often provided by Phinny, that are entertaining but which also serve as a contrast that highlights the peril. The tension builds and there is a very real sense of threat and impending doom.
As always, the period details are masterfully woven into the story, imbuing it with a genuine feel for the time. It’s also good to see the continued development in the characters and I hope there will be another adventure soon.
At the end of the book there is a glossary plus a short and sobering account of the Armenian massacres on which the tale is centred. There is also a delicious recipe for Soup Joumou.

OlgaNMBeoordeeld in Spanje op 20 februari 20255,0 van 5 sterren Our favourite medium has to face ancient powers and new menaces
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI have been a follower of the author’s blog and her books for many years now, and she never ceases to both, surprise and delight. And this is also the case with this novella, the third in a series called A Medium’s Peril, set in the 1920s, an era well-known and loved by the author, where the historical background, the likeable and relatable characters, and a touch of the paranormal combine to create stories that grab readers’ attention and imagination until the end.
I have read the two previous novellas in this series, so I was already familiar with the characters and eager to see where their next adventures would take them. This story follows chronologically from the second story in the series, A Peril in the Bayou, and, as the description says, we get to explore another area of Louisiana, its traditions, and some subjects that might be new to many readers, but somewhat familiar and not that distant from some of the topics we see daily in the news. Wars and genocides are nothing new, unfortunately, and the story reminds us of the Armenian Genocide, and the tragedy of the displacement and murder of large populations for reasons of religion, ethnicity, beliefs, politics, etc.
I won’t go into a lot of detail about the story, but Daphne Moultrie, the medium of the title, has to interpret some worrying visions, and Clover, her assistant and personal friend, has to contend with some dreams that prove her powers to sense and interpret signs and messages from the beyond are getting stronger. There are scary signs, legends, and myths (some of Romani origin), dubious characters, busy-bodies, a small town celebrating their pumpkin festival, ravens, pumpkin vines that seem to have a mind of their own, mysterious happenings and wonders, clairvoyants and tarot cards, wonderful cars, intriguing diaries, creepy but attractive men, and a traumatised young girl trying to make sense of it all. And, although there are plenty of scary and creepy moments, do not worry; there are light-hearted and funny times as well, many at the hands of Phineas, the enthusiastic reporter with a penchant for getting into trouble.
I enjoyed the myths and adventures, the secondary characters we meet in the novella, and also the way readers get to share in and try to interpret the visions and dreams. I also loved the way the setting works perfectly, and although not description-heavy, the novella manages to create a clear sense of place and time, with references to the clothes worn, the cars, telephones, and other ‘modern’ inventions, and especially the era-appropriate language the characters use.
The author includes a delicious-sounding recipe (for a very special soup that appears in the story) and a section of ‘Real World Notes’ at the end of the book, which I recommend checking out as well. It offers a good insight into some of the characters, events, and inventions mentioned in the novella, and it works as a good starting point for people who might want to research further some of the topics mentioned in the book.
I think the book can be read as a stand-alone story, but readers familiar with the series will be in an ideal position to appreciate the evolution of the characters and get even more enjoyment from the story.
I hope there will be more adventures in this series, as I have grown fond of all the characters. I also look forward to the author’s non-fiction books. Her Author Tool Chest Series is a great way to become familiar with the language, the customs, the historical figures, and the inventions of different historical periods, in an informative and entertaining way, ideal not only for authors but for people who enjoy bite-size information and are curious about the past.

D. W. PeachBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 29 januari 20255,0 van 5 sterren Fast-paced, mystical read set in the 1920s.
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI enjoyed the first two books in this series and looked forward to this one. Though it can be read as a stand-alone, there are some great characters that I appreciated having some familiarity with. And the first two books are well worth the time.
The book starts with a prologue and the point of view of a young girl caught up in the Armenian genocide that occurred in the mid-1920s. It’s heartbreaking and horrifying, but something powerful also occurred on that day, something which medium Daphne Moultre sees in a disturbing vision. She and her assistant Clover set out to investigate. The girl, Lousaper, now living near New Orleans, doesn’t remember what happened, and her doctor has a greedy gleam in his eye. Daphne’s determined to learn the truth and protect the child.
As I’ve come to expect, Geneviene’s imagination is in full gear, and Lousaper’s small town is full of colorful characters as well as mysterious pumpkin vines that move and grow in unnatural ways. The read is full of rich details from the 1920s and mystical Romani beliefs and myths. They all come together for a fast-paced and engaging read.
The backmatter includes a recipe for “Soup Joumou” (made with pumpkins, of course), and a glossary of real events and 1920s details included in the book. Highly recommended.

D.L. FinnBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 8 januari 20255,0 van 5 sterren A paranormal mystery to be solved!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopDaphne, Clover, and Phineas continue their story set in the 1920s. Daphne is a medium who has seen a massacre in her visions, which somehow link the pumpkins and vines that grow everywhere in the new town they end up in. Clover has a vivid dream that refers to tarot cards and a message. It all seems to center on a young girl and a doctor looking after her. Additionally, some matchmaking is happening. I love the setting and era and all the little details that bring it alive. Besides the paranormal, there is a mystery to figure out, along with some humor. I have been enjoying this series and, like all the characters, there’s a special place in my heart for Clover, Daphne’s assistant. I can easily recommend this quick read that can be a standalone, but I have preferred reading it from the beginning.
