A power and atmospheric tale of a group of four travellers abandoned in the bayou in the 1920s. They face many dangers, but the most dangerous one is unseen. This is a terrific sequel to the first book and I recommend it to everyone who likes an atmospheric tale well told.

A Peril in the Bayou is a fabulous stand alone sequel to the first book in this series. I enjoyed meeting up with world-famous medium, Daphne Moultrie, and her friend and secretary, Clover, again, as well as supporting characters Phineas and Albert.

Following on from her encounter with dark forces in book 1, Daphne is still recovering and trying to regain her strength. She is taking it easy and planning on writing a book about the resurgence of spiritualism to keep herself occupied and entertained during her convalescence period. As part of her research, she has reached out to a well-know spiritualist in New Orleans called Mother Leafy, and has planned a trip to that city to meet and interview her. It is decided that Clover, Phineas and Albert will all accompany her and they set off, travelling by fast train. Before they have left the Moultrie mansion, strange things start to happen and Clover knows their trip will be mysterious and possibly dangerous.

This second story is fast paced and very exciting. The eerie creepiness of the setting, plotline and writing is wonderful and absorbing, and I enjoyed every minute of this read.

I liked that Clover really came into her own as a strong female character in this story, and was a pillar of strength for Daphne and Phineas. Her own intuitions and powers as a medium continue to grow and develop throughout this story.

The author's attention to detail in respect of the era is always satisfying and I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of some of the clothing:

"She held up her newest dress. It was yellow cotton with daisies and tiny green leaves embroidered all over. A plain yoke at the top formed a bateau neckline and extended over the shoulders to make cap sleeves. In back, beginning at the edge of the yoke, an inverted box pleat of contrasting green tone went the length of the mid-calf dress."

"All eyes turned to Daphne when she appeared at the top of the stairs wearing an ivory bucket hat decorated with a silk rose, and a tea dress of powder blue georgette. Split flutter sleeves revealed her arms. The dress had a top layer with a "shark bite" hem that curved upward in front. The second layer hit at mid-calf."

I appreciate these descriptions as they really help me to imagine the clothing and settings of this era, and get into the mood of the book.

The spirits and mythical creatures are well drawn and unique, making this book unlike anything else I've read in the darker fiction genre.

A most entertaining read for any time of the year, but especially perfect for Halloween.

I have been following this author’s work for a while: her novels, the novelizations of the stories she creates in her blog (with the collaboration/complicity of the readers, who provide her with things or ingredients to move the story alone), and her novellas, in a variety of genres. Last year I read the first novella in the series A Medium’s Peril, and I was pleased to see that a new one was published in time for Halloween.
Those who have read the previous novella will enjoy meeting the main characters again, but those who haven’t don’t need to worry. Although the events that took place in the first novel are mentioned a few times, there are enough details for new readers to understand the nature of what happened, and nothing else is necessary to fully appreciate this story. I would recommend reading both, in the right order if possible, as we get to form a clearer picture of the characters in our minds and this enhances our enjoyment.
The author’s skill and her love for research come through in the pages, as we are offered some vivid descriptions of clothing, cars, trains, buildings, and locations, as well as some otherworldly beings and events that take place during the adventure. We are transported back in time, and we get to experience the characters’ feelings (excitement and joy at first, and progressively darker emotions, fears, and loss of control) close and personal. The bayou and its dark forces become important protagonist in this story, and those interested in Voodoo, Spiritualism, and 1920s New Orleans will find this story thrilling, as will any readers who love a strong characterization, creepy and eerie locations, and scary stories that combine supernatural events with insightful psychological portrayals.
So, the story has pretty scary moments but there is also joy and mirth, a wonderful catalogue of characters (some human and others... not so much), and plenty of information for those interested in learning more about the place and the era. The author includes a section of ‘real world notes’ at the back of the book, divided into assorted details (where we can discover the background story behind some of the expressions and comments made in the story), people (because some of the characters we meet are based on reality), spiritualism (which plays a big part in both novellas), transportation (in general), and the automobiles that make a starring appearance in the story. Those whose curiosity might be piqued by the novella will find more information in this section, and it is a good starting point for further research as well.
As I have mentioned, Ríordáin Geneviene’s writing can conjure up the most wonderful (and scary) images in our minds, and make us experience the anxiety and terror the characters feel at some points in the story. I recommend this novella to everybody who has read A Peril in Ectoplasm, fans of the author, and anybody who is looking for a short but intense read in time for Halloween (or at any other time), especially those who love to immerse themselves in a different era.

5,0 van 5 sterren A great swampy setting!

It was a pleasure to catch up with the cast of characters from the first book: A Peril in Ectoplasm. In this stand-alone second story, medium Daphne Moultrie plans to write a book on spiritualism, and heads to New Orleans to meet with spiritualist leader Mother Leafy. Clover, her psychic assistant, goes along as do their friends Albert and Phineas – the more the merrier. But their journey includes traveling through the bayou, and Mother Leafy’s rival has a plan to ensure they never emerge.

In a way, the bayou is the primary antagonist. The swampy setting where most of the story takes place is fabulous—full of dangerous creatures, dark water, ghostly apparitions, and strange lights and sounds. Their boat has been sabotaged, the island where they’re stranded is gradually being swept away, and they soon discover that survival requires a sacrifice.

The four main characters are well-rounded, consistent, and as engaging as the setting. They’re all distinct, likable, and easy to root for. The pace moves along well, and I polished off this book in two sittings. Geneviene’s distinctive style shines and I highly recommend this book to readers of paranormal fiction who enjoy a spooky setting, well-crafted characters, and a fantastical tale.

Having read the first book in this series, I had to follow up with this one. And I'm glad I did. The characters were like visiting old family.
World-famous medium, Daphne Moutrie, has been invited to visit with spiritualist leader, Mother Leafy in New Orleans, La. to consult with her about writing a spiritualist book.
Daphne's entourage include her new assistant, Clover, Albert, her housekeeper's nephew, and newspaper reporter, Phineas.
I met all of these characters in book one. But the main focus in this segment of the series was on Clover, and her developing paranormal abilities.
Right away, the reader knows something nefarious is afoot with the man who was supposed to guide the group safely through the bayou. It appears that Mother Leafy has a competitor who does not want Daphne Moutrie to be successful.
There were definitely perils galore as the group launched on this journey. The guide with an evil mission and the spirits who inhabit the place leave the reader gasping at each new development. Written in true Teagan Geneviene style, I was swept away to another world. While this book is a standalone, I was glad I had read the first book just to be better acquainted with the characters. If you are a fan of paranormal activity, plenty of action, and you have a vivid imagination, you will enjoy this book!
