Vietnam did more damage to the psyche of our country than any single event. It destroyed a generation of men. They went to war for a cause they knew nothing about, suffered terrible field conditions and came home to cries of, "baby killer!" Many became addicts there. I cannot imagine coming out of combat there and not having some level of PTSD. I was one of the lucky ones; my tour of duty in the Army was ending as Vietnam was getting cranked up. I did not escape unscathed. I became a New York City police officer and as such was on another front line. It was in our backyard.
Those of us lived in NYC in '68 were seriously concerned that the fabric of American society was being torn irreparably. Yes, there were a whole array of social issues on the front burner, but the wood in the tinder box was the 'Nam.
Over the years I have gone back time and again looking for one book that would put it all together; in my opinion this is that book. It is accurate and highly readable. The author tells a complex story like none other that I have read.
