Productbeschrijving

When 17-year-old Autumn Oaken and her twin brother Luke find their parents brutally murdered, they are soon summoned by their grandfather who lives not in another city, but in another world called the Underground—home to all magical creatures seeking refuge from humankind.

The twins journey into the Underground, discovering that they are not only elves, but “royals” and that their bloodline is in danger of extinction at the hands of their parents' murderer, Vyra Vaun. Living in a skyscraper tree called Arbor Castle, the twins seek to join the Warriors, a group of elves who fight to defend the kingdom and to stop Vyra and her malevolent followers.

But Autumn soon becomes distracted, locked in an elfin love triangle with forbidden, golden-haired Avery and brooding, green-eyed Victor, who has a dark secret. She realizes she must make a choice. Little does she know her decision could very well mean the difference between life and death for all of the Underground.

When I read first novels by any author, I tend to read with slightly lowered expectations than I have of authors who have an established publishing record. This author blew all my expectations out of the water!

The language is engaging, inviting the reader into the Underground. The author describes vividly, creating a scene without bogging the reader down with unnecessarily intricate details. She gives just enough - we can picture what she shows us, use our imagination for more, and move on to the action taking place in the scene. Mrs. Robinette is a talented author who knows how to find the right balance to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. I found this book eminently readable, which is higher praise than it may sound!

But what I think I enjoy most about this book was simply how fun it is to read! The author captures the personalities of her characters and develops them individually, which is not only a talent but it creates for the reader a relationship with her people. I do not have time to sit and read in one setting, but I found myself thinking about the characters during my work day - something I rarely do! She allowed me the opportunity to make new friends, for which I am grateful. I plan to introduce them to my students as well, and may create a unit based upon this book or series of books!

The second book cannot be released soon enough for me!

This is now one of my absolute favorite books! It has an interesting and dynamic cast of characters, that I'm sure will grow and change through the series. The plot is full of twists and turns that you don't see coming. It is really worth reading and appeals to a broad audience. Enjoy it!

4.0 van 5 sterren Enjoyable and promising 22 juni 2015

Oaken holds its own well among teen fiction. I found the lead character refreshingly relatable--she is thoughtful and has consistently applied strengths and weaknesses. The other characters are developed to different degrees--Luke, the twin, seems surprisingly shallow compared to Autumn, but that's likely a setup for his development in Ash. Victor and Kyndel are very intriguing characters, filled with promise that a more extensive backstory is coming. And while most of the plot is foreshadowed, it's not wholly predictable--the ambiguities in a few characters are maintained well enough to make you have to guess amid multiple possibilities.
I at first was a little put off by the underground world, which seemed to be just our world but with everything prettier and magical, but over the course of the book as the dynamics between the underground and our world were explained, the similarities and differences make sense and open up some intriguing possibilities in future books for development of those dynamics as a social commentary.
Another refreshing characteristic is that this book is an appropriate perspective on teen life--the characters do things both noble and stupid, without either side being blown out of proportion or lacking in consequences.

5.0 van 5 sterren A thrilling ride with friends you wish you had.... 19 maart 2015

If you like for your books to pull you in, transport you to another world entirely for a time, and keep you up at night because you just HAVE to know what happens next, Oaken is for you. You get a little love triangle, a little family, a lot of friendship, and even some fun fashion to boot. The story of the Oaken twins is anything but boring, and the characters have substance and depth you don't always expect in books of this genre. You can tell that the story isn't just what is on the page, but there are back stories, a rich history, and so many hidden pieces to the world Robinette created for her readers to savor. Can't wait for the next book, but until then, I guess I'll just read it all over again.
5.0 van 5 sterren The bad guys/girls have my first name as their last name = biased. 4 april 2015

I've always had sympathy for the villain. I think they're the most interesting and tricky.

Due to the name alone I may cheer for the Vaun's versus the Oaken's.

Autumn Oaken grows in this first installment but when she's weak she makes me want to pull out my hair. Her very weakness allows some of the plot to move forward and causes preventable tragedy. When she's strong and stands up for what's right I'm inclined to whoop, "Finally!"

Luke Oaken is simple. He wants what he wants and at first he's a failure at getting it. Once in the Underground he begins to live his shallow dream. I'm hoping for his sake he wakes up.

Victor Lavigne is mysterious and dark. He's the bad boy everyone falls for and Autumn's compassion is a bit understandable here BUT she takes it farther than I ever would. In their relationship I find the kernels of real life abuse that the kind-hearted can let go on too long until they lose their sense of self and life, sadly.

King Olympus remains a remote figure and that makes me grieve for the loss. Somewhat like a Disney show or a half hour sitcom aimed at teens, the parents and authority figures make token appearances.

I think this is typical for YA and not a criticism.

If you'd like to read a young story with adventure, new lands and life forms then this is for you. Don't pick this book up as an adult and expect Tolkien. A quick read that entertains is what you will get and enjoy - not invented languages and stilted female characters. (Although I do love LoTR!)

Finally, Melody Robinette began this book's first draft when she was fifteen and I wish I'd had that kind of resolve at that age. My courage didn't exist then past short stories and poems. I applaud anyone who puts their heart on the page and let's others see it. It's hard and often unrewarding to do.

If you're game to read another's joy then I say pick this one up. ;)
