There are gazillions of books about coaching methodologies, and even more book about how to create highly profitable coaching business. Few, however, get to the essence of coaching, and even less go beyond the technical foundations, which actually lay on an ancient philosophy.
New Maieutic is not another book on how-to-do coaching. It does not promise you billions. But it will help you understand better few things on how coaching can be used for good in every day’s life, regardless of who you are.
This book is divided in two parts completing each other: a monologue, that is more dialogical; and an essay in eight chapters, which is dialectical. It blends scientifical research, psychology, philosophy, memories and introspection, in order to answer to three questions:
- What is the purpose of coaching?
- Why classic philosophy and modern coaching methods can be congruent?
- How it can elevate any average Joe to his “super” version?
In fact, “Maieutic” is another word for Socratic Method: a set of principles aimed to investigate our knowledge of the world, and challenge our assumptions. It is a tool for personal improvement. There are life-lasting benefits from a coaching mindset. All its power can be unleashed by something as common as a conversation.
New Maieutic will address the following points:
- Good coaches follow themselves an ethic of self-improvement
- There is no end to learning, but learning has not an end in itself
- Past literature can set up interesting formats for our modern times
- Emotions can be used mindfully to connect with our interlocutors
- Daoism, Neurosciences contribute to coaching, in a way
- A mature application of the “nosce te ipsum” principle
- The value of observation, imagination, memory, critical thinking, and iterative thoughts
- Debunking the self-help approach and introducing a different state of mind
- Fractal geometry, learning and neural network have more in common than you think
