The title of this review says it all. Music, performance and sound are all sublime. In my first two and one-half decades of life, I sang in choral groups ranging from church and college choirs to a semiprofessional group that sang at the White House for Nixon's final St. Patrick's Day service. So, it is with a fair amount of experience with choral music that I can absolutely say that this is one of the most beautiful choral albums ever recorded. There is something very special about boys' voices as a contrast to the female soprano and alto voices usually used in choral groups. The Choir of New College Oxford under the direction of Edward Higginbottom performs a dozen beautiful classical sacred works composed by Bach to Tavener. The performances are exquisite. Most of the pieces will be familiar to those with choral experience. For the uninitiated, these off as complete an introduction to great choral music as you can find. The sound is stellar with the perfect amount of reverberation. Higginbottom, as usual, has prepared his group well. Intonation and diction could not be better. One of my personal favorites is a choral arrangement of Lux aeterna by Elgar, a piece my wife and I chose for our wedding in memory of our fathers who had passed into the eternal light.
I cannot recommend Agnus Dei more highly. Listen to it and watch this troubled world fade into the background for 72+ glorious minutes.
