Wonderful and excellent rendition of Ovid's Metamorphoses!8 augustus 2019 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
I have been studying Classical Latin for a few years, and have enjoyed the experience. I recently was drawn to the writings of Ovid, a Roman poet of the Augustan Age, most noted for his 15 books on Roman mythology. I had read a number of his stories in Latin, but also wanted something more than the Loeb editions. Since I also am fluent in early and middle English, and have enjoyed the works of Gower, Chaucer, and the many writings of Lydgate, I was overjoyed when I saw this volume written in Elizabethan English; the language of Shakespeare. For me the work speaks volumes in terms of a greater verbiage, and the syntax and grammar are a breeze to read, and thoroughly enjoy. I highly recommend this work to any fan of Ovid, looking for more than the staid treatments of Ovid's works by 19th and 20th century academics who at best, only copy those works in what they believe to be better prose and poetry versions of this seminal work.

The Translation of Ovid's METAMORPHOSES Read by William Shakespeare24 maart 2016 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
Arthur Golding published this translation of the Roman poet Ovid's METAMORPHOSES in 1567, so of course it's in Elizabethan English. I was happy to find this version edited by John Frederick Nims to compare with more recent translations. Nims' introduction is engaging and particularly useful to those interested in reading the translation that was available to Shakespeare. In his introduction, Nims convincingly proves that Shakespeare's use of the METAMORPHOSES indicates that he knew the work in Latin, from his studies at the Kings Grammar School in Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as in Golding's translation. In the 16th century, "grammar" referred to Latin grammar. I am familiar with Ovid, and enjoyed the book and found it helpful in my own research. However, if you are going to read only one English translation of Ovid's great mythological work, I'd recommend a more recent translation, e.g. Charles Martin's, which captures Ovid's somewhat jaunty style.

If you're interested in early modern literature, this is the edition for you.18 augustus 2010 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
David Llewelyn is correct that people who are interested in the early modern period, and Shakespeare, will want to snap up this edition while it's available. I'm glad to be able to have this in my library, so that I can read the translation that was most popular during Shakespeare's career.

THE English Ovid for all ages15 november 2012 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
Arthur Golding's English Metamorphoses IS the definite Ovid. Besides, anybody who wants to master Early Modern English has to read this classic, both as a work of translation and an artistic piece in itself...Thomas Tseng, Taiwan
