Prince Phillip became King Phillip of Macedonia, Greece in 359 BC. He reigned for 23 years. His reign had several aspects which made it historically significant. The first was that he inherited and dramatically improved a kingdom on the rise militarily and politically from his father, King Amyntas. The second aspect was that he pursued a goal of conquering the Persian Empire which had been the dominant empire in the region for decades. The Persians had actually taken over many Greek colonies on the Eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea and had made successful and humiliating excursions into Greece itself during their time in power. All Greeks at this time remembered these events very well. Phillip was able to conquer the other major city-states in Greece during his lifetime and was on the verge of creating a unified Greece when he was assassinated. Thirdly, Phillip had a son named Alexander whom he trained militarily and politically to effectively run Macedonia and pursue his agenda. Alexander the Great was able to unify the Greek city-states and conquer Persia, Egypt and many others during his brief lifetime. These events significantly altered human history and affect us even today. This story is of Prince Phillip when he was in his young adult years. The story covers events which make his young adult life very intriguing and singular for his or any other time. It also covers aspects of young adulthood which are common to nearly everyone.
