Productbeschrijving

On an odyssey to join the revolution in Cuba - ten years after it ended - a gang of brutal jungle bandits see television for the first time. Their leader, Father Gerard Limerick falls in love with the beautiful soap actress, Magdalena. Recovering after being badly wounded in a battle with the army, he becomes convinced he’s been resurrected in order to save her from the soap’s evil Senor Gonzales, and becomes determined to make her his wife.
To indulge his quixotic delusion, the bandits travel to a film camp deep in the jungle, holding the cast and crew hostage while they await the arrival of the actor playing Senor Gonzales.
Meanwhile, Limerick’s disenchanted son, Rico yearns for a life beyond this picaresque absurdity. Unable to be with a prostitute he loved, or to save a farmer’s wife from the men, Rico becomes desperate to save Magdalena from his crazy father and his psychotic family of bandits; even if it means crossing the most frightening man in the world.

5.0 van 5 sterren “If my dreams had been real…” 5 juni 2016

From a murky beginning, Rico grows up among bandits. He wants to learn to read and write, but the father tells him no. He did go into a classroom once.

“Eventually, the teacher asked me to talk about myself. So I told them I knew how to clean and fire a gun, clean and skin a wild pig, and how I knew the best place to shoot a man so that he dies slowly, and I knew why there were holes in hunting knives.”

I didn’t know what to expect with Madness of the Turtle. The last book I read by S. R. Wilsher was The Collection of Heng Souk. It was a book of depth and breadth, with the characters reflecting their yearnings and growth across both short and long increments of time. While different, Madness of the Turtle does represent the author’s insight into human emotions and motivations, as well as a culture and frame of reference vastly different from that of most readers.
5.0 van 5 sterren A book that makes you think 10 januari 2015

I must say that there was a point after the first few chapters that the book got a little bogged down and I almost gave up on it. However, the next paragraph I read drew me in again and I am so happy I continued. The ending stirs all the emotions that make it worth it. The author developed the characters very well from the delusional bandit leader to the fantasy driven main character to the characterization of some of the lesser bandits. The book really made me think about the lives of those whose situations and backgrounds are so very different from ours and the relatively few lack of choices they have in directing their lives. The fantasy dreams of the main character also bring up thoughts of our own, how we visualize things in our head that often then turn out to be very different from what we thought. I would highly recommend sticking with this book.

Poetically told. The plot was a little rocky; but the text asks deeper questions beautifully. It is not an action novel, it is a quest for identity.

4.0 van 5 sterren Engaging and interesting 16 januari 2014
door paul little - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
This is a quixotic story and a journey; the journey is both physical and metaphorical as a young boy becomes a man as a man determines what is real from what is delusion.

We follow our characters on their journey through a meandering series of episodes, learning as we go more about the character of the group than of many of the individuals. The group is rough and tough, undereducated and with little regard for law or life. The major characters become well developed and we get a good feeling about how they see themselves and in particular we delve into Rico’s thoughts and his relationship with his father becomes a central theme of the book. As the journey continues, the cracks appear and tensions grow. We get to witness the disintegration of world views and the inevitable conflicts that this brings to people who are used to solving problems with guns or a knife to the gut. Regret and introspection are unfamiliar friends to the characters.

This ebook is engaging and well written, makes good use of the flawed leader and his belief in his own importance and the self serving interpretation of Robin Hood’s tales and the meandering story has the opportunity to both shock and surprise until the end.
4.0 van 5 sterren A coming of age story of love, blind faith 30 april 2016

Absolutely fascinating. A brutal tale told from the narrative of a young boy whose adoptive father is a psychopath. A coming of age story of love, blind faith, awakening.
