“So I thought I might take up para-gliding. You know, buy one on eBay and just jump off the cliff one morning.” Emily Willows is middle-aged, widowed, wealthy and bored. When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life. Nor could she have guessed that she will be confronting it with the enigmatic young woman who moved in next door a few months ago and who has hardly spoken a word to her since. And neither of them has realised yet that after this meeting, their lives will never be the same again.

Gripping Plot3 februari 2017 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
Enjoyed the author's earlier series about DS Smith so took a chance on Lane and was very happy I did. The story starts off a bit slowly largely describing the lonely life of a widow Emily Willows, in Cornwall, and the mysterious young woman who becomes her neighbor. The pace suddenly ramps up when Emily is kidnapped, and the intensity builds through to the last page. Without spoiling the plot, I will say that the reader would be wise to ignore that the central character is an elderly woman and trust that you will want to know what happens. Let's hope Peter Grainger intends to offer us more of what Lane and Willows get up to.

The end?16 september 2017 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
The only thing I don't lke about this author is that he leaves you hanging at the end. In other words, you know there's more to the story, but he doesn't finish it till the next book. That's fine if he already has the next book ready to read, but if it is there's no indication of where to find it--at least on Amazon. If the next book hasn't yet been published, by the time it is I have forgotten the original plot and where it might go. Very frustrating. Otherwise, I am very taken with this author. He writes well and takes you in interesting directions. Summer Lane is a new protagonist for him--a former DI who was seriously injured in the line of duty and who, as a result, was considered too damaged to continue serving. She moves in next door to Emily Willows and then the "game" is afoot. I have not yet decided if Lane and Willows should get equal billing. Maybe in the next Case for Willows and Lane? I hope the next book in what I assume will be a new series, will be available very, very soon!

A fascinating change of pace for Peter Grainger1 maart 2017 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
This is a big change of pace for Peter Grainger. We are used to the thoughtful intelligent pace of his DC Smith novels, amongst my favourite Police Procedurals of the moment as character and self-deprecating humour are more important than mindless action or long unnecessary descriptions of landscape to pad out the pages. Now, out of the blue, comes Lane starring Willows and Lane. I expected a cosy mystery but this could well be the basis for a film. The plot is fast and sufficiently complex to keep the reader's interest, but what is most surprising is the depth of characterisation in a relatively short book. Excellent. Will there be more?

Too short and unresolved21 november 2017 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
I, too, am in a funk, having run through the seven DC Smith books. Our new hero, Summer Lane, shows great promise, and I would happily have given this one five stars—it is written with Grainger's usual wit and grace—but alas, it was over in a trice. Or, more correctly, it ended—but left many, many elements of the story unresolved. Like the DS Smith books, I suspect that subsequent Lane adventures will contain references to the previous novels—or at least I hope so! What was the underlying motivation for that damned kidnapping, anyway?!

Couldn't Put The Book Down5 maart 2017 - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com
Having thoroughly enjoyed Peter Grainger's DC Smith series, I was curious to read this newest endeavor and was not disappointed. Emily Willows is a late middle-aged widow whose life borders on the humdrum; her new next door neighbor is a younger, enigmatic woman, whose comings and goings pique Emily's curiosity. When the two find themselves in a hostage situation, the narrative becomes fast paced, a real page turner right to the end. I can't wait to see what the author has in store for Willows and Lane in the future
