Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopMy first Deisel Punk story and what fun! Lulu is a great character, feisty, fun-loving, and klutzy. I love all her cute roaring 20s words like mind your own beeswax, bushwa, zozzled, hooch, and horsefeathers. The story is full of cool characters, some human and some robots, and even a cameo appearance by Nikola Tesla! Hop on the magic train and have the ride of your life with Hullaba Lulu and her zany friends.

Nigel ByngBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 5 december 20245,0 van 5 sterren You Gotta love Lulu: A wonderful read!!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI had never read Diesel Punk before, but I have always been open to new genres, new narratives, and fantastic storytelling. And without a doubt, Teagan is a fabulous writer. Great storytellers will spin captivating yarn no matter the world they have transported us into.
Hullaba Lulu takes us into the world of the 1920s prohibition era, where our main character Lulu, and her friends Rose and Pearl take us on an adventure like no other. Lulu is quirky, witty, curious, and a magnet for trouble. Her personality immediately resonates and consumes the reader. You want to be with her on this adventure, and despite all her quirks, she is the hero of this story who rises to the occasion when called upon. I love strong female leads, and Lulu is formidable.
The story incorporates elements of technology and magic, and alternate realities which are entirely believable, and Lulu takes us on this whirlwind ride that wants to feel like the Wizard of Oz, (I mean this as a compliment) but a million times more entertaining. There is no yellow brick road, but a Dieselpunk train run by angel bots, (which is bloody impressive) and the unforgettable Valentino, who owns this fantastical piece of machinery. And Nikola Tesla even makes an appearance!!
It is a short read, yet full of wonderfully deep, engaging characters. It has all the colloquialisms, sounds, sights, and tastes of the period which Teagan used to perfection to bring the era to life expertly. The narrative is filled with all these fascinating anecdotes, of music, places, and even automobiles. I am trying not to give anything away, as I'm not too fond of spoilers, but the story is riveting from the beginning to the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a quick read, engaging, imaginative, funny, informative, and a testament to the versatility of Teagan and her ability as a wonderful writer/storyteller.

Dave WilliamsBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 24 mei 20244,0 van 5 sterren A fantastical, wild ride!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopLulu is a flapper in the Roaring Twenties. But we’re not in the regular Roaring Twenties, Toto.
We start in New York City. In Lulu’s grandfather’s speakeasy, to be specific. We get the sights of the city. We get the taste of giggle water. We get the sounds of the 1920s slang. Bushwa! Horsefeathers! Floorflusher, zozzled, and much more. These are neat for adding flavor of the time period.
The fantastical gets going after Lulu and her friends (Rose and Pearl) meet Valentino (a suave guy reminiscent of swash-buckling movie stars). You see, Valentino owns a magical train that has automaton helpers nicknamed “angel-bots.” Also, the train’s dining car is an automat — a concept that has intrigued me since I heard about it awhile back.
Lulu, her friends, grandfather, Valentino, and the angel-bots go on a wild ride of an adventure on the train. They visit an alternate version of Atlantic City. Then, in returning to NYC, an alternate version of the jazzy joint of the Cotton Club. So Lulu is not fully in an Oz-ish fantasy world, but she encounters extraordinary elements. Including a tilt-a-whirl and a painted mural that can transport people to other places.
Lulu is a fun-loving gal who can be a bit clumsy, but mostly she has to be flexible to deal with the wild changes that happen to her and the group. And she rises to the occasion when help is needed to save Valentino.
Did you enjoy Dorothy and Alice’s journeys into the wondrous? If so, check out Lulu’s journey. It’s unpredictable, and a peach of a story. I mean, c’mon, cheeseburgers are currency in this Atlantic City! A theremin is used for therapeutic purpose. Nikola Tesla joins the fun. A fantastical story, indeed.

Robbie CheadleBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 2 oktober 20205,0 van 5 sterren A fabulous and worthwhile read
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopHullaba Lulu is a fun and imaginative story set during the prohibition in the USA. Lulu has been raised by her grandfather who runs a speakeasy from an abandoned underground railway station. The story starts with a train appearing at the station on the speakeasy side of a rockfall. The train is owned by the mysterious Valentino and his angelbot assistants which are nothing like Lulu and her two best friends, Rose and Pearl, have ever seen before.
Before long, Lulu, Rose, Pearl and Grandfather are aboard the train and on the adventure of their lives. They travel sideways in time and visit Atlantic City, the Cotton Club in New York City and various other amazing and interesting places all seen through the skewed lens of sideways travel which results in these places being almost the same as in ordinary life, but not quite.
The author has managed to weave all sorts of fascinating titbits of information about flappers and life in the 1920's into the tale as well as songs from that time, famous people and all every other interesting and trademark USA items you can think of like Ouija boards, automobiles, tarot cards and fortune tellers. The way they come into the story is so natural that it just seems quite right that they should be there.
There is strong characterisation in this short book and the author has a talent for creating strong female characters who are excellent role models for girls and women. I am always delighted that her women characters have healthy appetites, speak their minds and generally do not adopt the coquettish and 'fake' behaviour so common to women, even today.
Despite this book being reasonably short, it manages to delve into certain social problems that still exist such as the superiority of the wealthy and their habit of looking down on people who have to earn a living or whose lives are not as cut and dried with regards to relationships and lifestyles as their own.
False friendships, devious and misleading behavior, resentment and anger, all of these unpleasant and difficult emotions that hamper human happiness are featured, but they are off set by great loyalty, heroic behaviour, obtaining pleasure from simple things in life like eating a cheeseburger, and romance.
It is quite unbelievable how Ms Geneviene has managed to cover so much ground in this single fantasy book. It is a fabulous and worthwhile read and not one to miss out on.
