How do you fight the evil inside you?

For thirteen years, Gracen Sullivan dreamed about a red-eyed demon named Hart Blackwell who tortured her every night. Her mother freaked when she found out about her daughter's "hallucinations" and forced Gracen to go to the doctor, who prescribed some very powerful medication which kept Hart out of her head for five years.

A week ago, Hart came back and brought a friend.

But something has changed, and Gracen is seeing Hart when she's awake too. And the other "friends" in her dreams? They have been found dead.

The police want to talk to her.

Her boyfriend has become distant.

Her dreams are becoming more and more intense.

Hell wants her.

Heaven has to stop her.

When push comes shoving, can Gracen fight the evil eating away inside her or will she be forced to embrace it and destroy the world?

5.0 van 5 sterren “Heartless” by Kelly Martin is freaking awesome! 17 januari 2016

I love it when a book makes you think. Martin’s story will compel you to rethink all you’ve been told about religious doctrine. Her characters, very well-developed by the way, reveal concepts about God, evil/chaos, and angels/demons which will leave you scratching your head.

The premise of “Heartless” is very unique and deserves a spot in the Twilight Zone gallery. The first pages draw you in with a scene from a horror movie (the main character is being eaten alive!). It teased my mind and left me begging for more. It was hard to tear myself away from this book.
The main character, Gracen, seems to be deeply troubled. All of her turmoil is spilled on the page. Instead of being repulsed by the things in her mind, it drew me in (I admit to being a little twisted myself). I kept wondering could she really be so tortured.

And just when I thought I couldn’t learn more about this college freshman, the reveals start. When I read the first revelation (about 70% into the book) all the pieces fit together. It was as if the dark clouds parted and everything made sense. The book didn’t leave my hot hands until I read ‘the end’. And OMG it was a mind blow moment.

Martin crafted some wonderful characters. Believe it or not, the protagonist was not on my list of favorites. I liked her, but she was clueless and didn’t operate from the strength hiding within her. But wait…big things are coming up for this character. She will crawl up under your skin and make her home. Be prepared.

My favorite character was Hart (a nice play on words). I loved his maniacal tendencies. Believe it or not he’s the innocent one in this story. My heart went out to him. Read this book and you’ll find out. He’ll become your favorite as well.

Lucien is my second favorite. He was perfectly clueless, but his naivety was totally different. By the end of the book his bravery shone through. Unfortunately, loyalty has its price too.

The real villain in “Heartless” is a serious surprise. It was so unexpected, but it fit. The things the villain says throughout the story make sense. This character has an uncompromising hidden agenda. And when you learn the reason for the anger suppressed by the villain…your mind will be blown.

Anytime a book like “Heartless” mentions Biblical references I start my own research. This time I had to check the names of the characters. Gracen is a female version of Grayson meaning ‘gray-haired’ and ‘God’s blessing’ (keep that one in mind). Lucien means ‘light’ and is also the name of a saint. Seth means ‘placed’ or ‘appointed’. He was the third son of Adam and Eve. Sam is short for Samuel and means ‘God has heard’. Jessup is a variation of Joseph which means ‘Jehovah increases’. Hart is a play on the word ‘heart’. All of this is relevant to the story, and will make sense once you read it.

Finally, Martin wrote some unforgettable lines: “Demon Sunday School,” “How can you run from what’s inside of you?”, and my favorite “History, or what we think about history, is never just the actual events as they occurred. They are facts, and I use that term loosely, as told by someone as told by someone else.” Priceless.

I highly recommend Kelly Martin’s “Heartless”. It will make you think. It might just keep you awake at night.
5.0 van 5 sterren Different, but awesome! 24 april 2017

I loved the whole storyline of this book. It was really unique and a bit gorey, but I love gore!
Graven Sullivan, our main character has really endured some rough stuff her whole life! The dreams this girl has is enough to make anyone want to hunt down some hypnocil! A man named Hart Blackwell is there with her, everytime she sleeps. There to torture her in unimaginable ways!

Gracen has never felt normal and by the end of the story there is good treason for that!

The only bad thing I have say is that the main character seems to ramble a lot about the same was kinda hard to stick with, but I never quit and I'm glad because I did enjoy the overall story!
4.0 van 5 sterren Crazy halfling the key to Hell. 23 april 2017

I liked this book. It was about a halfling, half angel half human, and her life when everyone thinks she is crazy, hearing people when awake, and super crazy dreams when she's asleep. In the middle, she goes to college after being let out the of the psych ward and it just spirals down afterwards. She becomes tangled in a web of deceit, lies, and made a little romance feelings. In the end, she was used as a key to hell and stabbed in the chest...ouch! I find Sam's/Hart's verbage to be fun and cocky, I loved his character in this book and loved his storyline of the past in book 2. The only con was I find it to be slow moving and found myself skimming at a few points. Overall good.
5.0 van 5 sterren One of my favorites for the year! 19 juni 2016

I went through so many emotions in this book. In the beginning, I hated Hart. Harsh, I know, but come on! He's the demon who's been torturing her for years! And then, little by little, as Gracen's world seems like it's falling apart, pieces of the puzzle start connecting and by the end, well, like I said, "my feels have feels". I closed this book, heartbroken. Not so much for Hart but for everything.

Another thing I loved was how Kelly worked classic Bible events into the book without making it preachy. A lot of times, a big downside to Christian Fiction is that it tends to get a bit preachy. Not these books. She takes characters right out of the Bible and they become current in today's world. I loved how she was able to do that and actually make it work!

Let's just say, I'm glad I don't have to wait for book #2.

5.0 van 5 sterren And Then God Got Bored 19 januari 2016

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And it was good and all the angels rejoiced.............. And then God got bored."

Kelly Martin does a marvelous job at putting you in Gracen's shoes. We follow along with Gracen and she knows very little about what is going on in the beginning, which means we know very little. As the story progresses things get jumbled and confusing in the best way possible. In the way that forces you to keep turning page after page, gasping and grasping at bread crumbs.

Every character introduced in this book will make you suspicious. Every character will have you second guessing other characters. I want to rant and rave and tell you everything about this book because it is so, so, so good, but I won't. I'll spare you that amazing feeling of reading a WONDERFUL book for the first time. Stop reading this review and go one-click this book, you won't regret it. I can't recommend this book enough!

About the book for anyone hesitant: From what I heard other people say about this book and from the first few pages I was expecting this to be full of horror and blood and gory things happening. I don't do scary, I don't do horror or gory, but there was something about that first page that called to me, maybe I saw that there would be more to this story. Maybe I knew it wasn't how it seemed. And I was right. It's more of a mystery with angels and demons and hints of horror. It's not nearly as grotesque as some might think after reading the first few pages. It talks about it and makes you feel the horror without being too gory.

I would definitely classify this as a new adult paranormal horror mystery. There's talks of sex (no sex in this book though), there are innuendos, and typical college flirting and lusting. Recommended age for reading is a mature 14 years and older.

This is a trilogy so be prepared for an epic cliffhanger in the epilogue. If you dislike cliffhangers then I recommend reading the final chapter and waiting to read the epilogue when book two, Soulless, comes out, February 14, 2016.
