This is the second book in the Dreamer’s Alliance series and a great sequel to the first. The main character, Zach, is a lucid dreamer who can control his dreams, interact with others while in a dream state, and if necessary, step into his dream’s location in physical form. The FBI has become aware of his ability, and a couple of Feds with questionable ethics want him to spy on and set up a gangster for a take-down. To complicate matters, the gangster is a quasi-family friend, and Zach doesn’t want the job. Too bad he doesn’t have a choice.
The magic system (lucid dreaming) is wonderfully developed with detailed rules that work for and against Zach as he infiltrates not only the criminal underworld, but the FBI. The ability feels authentic, and Zach’s careful navigation of his assigned tasks, as well as how much he shares with whom, adds to the reality and complexity of the plot. Technology and modern surveillance techniques also play a part in the story, both helping and hindering Zach’s objectives.
Zach’s a great character who comes across as a common family man and loyal friend. Secondary characters—particularly his daughter Abbie, his brother Mike, and his friend Billy—serve as his sounding board and play small but integral parts in the coordination of several operations. They also round Zach out with glimpses into the ordinary parts of his life. He’s likable and clever, and I enjoyed watching him rise to the occasion and outsmart his multiple adversaries. Billy’s ability to sense the future (and occasionally see it) layers on the tension since he rarely shares what he knows.
The story moves at a moderate pace, and yet I found myself flipping pages and unable to put the book down, especially during the last quarter of the read as the tension escalates. Everything wraps up well with a few teasers for future storylines, which I look forward to jumping into. Highly recommended to readers of paranormal thrillers who enjoy a strong plot and characters that are easy to root for.
