About 3.5 stars on Goodreads's scale again; maybe a little more, so I rounded up even there.
Action-wise, book 3 centers on trying to find Cutter and Master Grindmor, while investigating the possibility of trouble from within and/or without, as the criminal guilds scheme, and other races (orcs? trolls? ogres?) may be trying to capitalize on and increase the human kingdom's lack of allies (since its recent rulers had been increasingly insular) ... and the two issues may be connected. A major section takes place in a swamp, so herpetophobics be warned. Ethical issues include the necessity of killing the enemy, even if not in a fair fight.
Relationship-wise, this volume focuses on Jev's unhappy sense of duty that keeps him from pursuing more of a relationship with Zenia, while Zenia is having her own second thoughts (especially after meeting Jev's one-time fiancee).
Magic-wise, Zenia continues to be surprised by how much the dragon-carved dragon's tear stone is able (and even troublingly eager) to do.
Style-wise, it's Lindsay Buroker: an entertaining, easy, light read. With Cutter missing, most of the teasing and wisecracks have to come from Rhi or Jev, though Zenia's trying to be less unapproachable. Maybe it was the gray weather today, but sometimes it felt a little flat or immaturely lame to me. Not to say that I don't still like the characters, just ... I got a smidge impatient.
Proofreading-wise, I only caught one missing comma, and a plural-possessive error that makes a dangerous supernatural race sound like ruminants: "[Jev] slammed a boot into one of his adversary’s stomachs."
I wish I were better at discussing books w/o verging on spoilers. Once again, the immediate crisis is resolved, in dramatic fashion. Personal matters take a step forward, but then the epilogue brings a new complication. I suspect book 4 will have more to do with elves, so maybe I'll finally get some of my answers about the cryptic Lornysh.
