The Delta Pearl: A Steampunk Riverboat (English Edition) Kindle-editie
.
The magical riverboat has a full complement of crew, all of whom have gemstone names, but they also use their positions as names, like the Captain, the Cook, and the Dealer. Then there’s the Delta Pearl — the riverboat herself, who is the most mysterious of all.
.
Rescued and brought aboard the riverboat as a young child, Émeraude now approaches her sixteenth birthday, but she is uncertain where she fits in that hierarchy.
.
The riverboat has taken on an array of intriguing passengers. Émeraude has taken a fancy to a particular young inventor. As for the rest, any and all of them spell trouble. Mystery and danger flow with each turn of the paddlewheel.

Kindle CustomerBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 20 juli 20245,0 van 5 sterren Admirable female characters
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopThe Delta Pearl is a fantasy adventure about a mythical steamboat that travels the waterways of North America for all eternity. The boat is staffed by an intriguing crew of people who are all named for gemstones and who have all been 'marked' by the Delta Pearl.
The main character is a young woman of sixteen years old called Emeraude, who came aboard the boat as a small girl after the Delta Pearl saved her from drowning in the river. Emeraude, or Emmie as she's called by the cook, is loved by the entire crew and treated like a daughter by the captain and the dealer. The book starts with Emeraude being entrusted with the important job of greeting the new guests coming aboard the riverboat. This is very unusual as the captain always greets the new passengers so Emeraude is immediately alerted to possible danger.
The passengers are an interesting group with a wealthy couple, Mr and Mrs Needleman, coming aboard with a very expensive piece of jewelry in their possession. The super bright inventor, Victor T. Elam, is also introduced as an eccentric and mystical character. All of the passengers have a story and this leads to lots of intrigue culminating in the theft of Mrs Needleman's Pharaoh Diamond.
Ms Geneviene's female characters are all excellent. They are all strong and admirable women, who stand up to the men and social restrictions in their lives. A few of them are positively heroic which is lovely, especially as the book is set during a time when societal conventions and expectations were very limiting for females.
There is everything you could wish for in a story in this first, fast paced, part of this two book story. There are clockwork creatures, both evil and good characters, sneaky passengers, and a young terror who causes all sorts of problems for the crew and other passengers.
If you enjoy highly imaginative stories packed with excitement and adventure, this is the series for you.

Colleen M. ChesebroBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 3 juli 20245,0 van 5 sterren Magical characters you will never forget!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopPrepare to immerse yourself into the magical world of the Delta Pearl and the Victorian era. The riverboat is an enigma.
“Some said it was haunted, or it was the river’s version of the Lost Dutchman, cruising the waterway for eternity. Others claimed it was fairy magic. The only thing they agreed on was that if you saw the Delta Pearl, you were marked for death.”
Geneviene, Teagan Ríordáin. The Delta Pearl: A Steampunk Riverboat (p. 12). Riordain Books. Kindle Edition.
We begin by meeting Émeraude, now almost sixteen years old. She came aboard the riverboat as a young girl. There’s a mystery connected to the young lady and how she came to be on the riverboat. We also meet the captain, the cook, and the dealer. Each character is also connected to the riverboat and possesses a different gemstone name.
There is a wide array of mechanical steampunk creatures, called clockwork. My favorites were the owl and the spider, called Amethyst. Each mechanical device is also linked to the riverboat.
The passengers who come aboard the Delta Pearl are interesting and unusual. Especially a young inventor named Victor, who happens to fall for Émeraude in a big way.
There is a mystery to unravel within these pages. Émeraude looks identical to a woman in a painting aboard the riverboat. Could she be a relative, or is there another explanation?
When one of the passenger’s valuable Pharaoh diamond disappears, Émeraude and the crew set off to find the gem and the thief!
What a delightful read. I found myself transported to another time and dimension aboard the Delta Pearl.
