Dead of Winter: Journey 14, The Veil Paperback – 13 juni 2022
Aankoopopties en uitbreidingen
.
Other threads from the previous thirteen Journeys also come together in this volume, which concludes Dead of Winter.
.
As many readers said they don’t want these Journeys to end, in the final chapter, I added hints about potential future adventures for many of the characters. These are food for the imagination of readers, so that the story can continue in the mind.
.
This has been as much of a “journey” for me as it was for Emlyn. I’ve seen truths about myself along the way. Perhaps the same applies to you.
.
“Who can say? What is true for us? That with which we are born? Or that which is the manifestation of our heart and soul? I like who and what I am, as well as the way I see the world I see around me, when I am a dragon.”
.
Thank you for being an important part of the Journeys of Dead of Winter.
Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene

OlgaNMBeoordeeld in Spanje op 23 juni 20225,0 van 5 sterren All is well that ends well. A fitting ending to a totally immersive journey
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopIt is with some mixed feelings that I write this review. Not about this journey or Dead of Winter, of course. No need to worry. The ending is everything I could have hoped for, and even more. But, after a year and a half of following Emlyn (and the rest of the characters) in their adventures, it feels very strange to get to the end. No matter how well it all works and how fitting the ending is, knowing that I don’t have more journeys to look forward to makes me a bit sad. At a time when reality proved dire and challenging, Dead of Winter gave us something to look forward to: excitement, adventures, magic, friendship, legends, wisdom, risk, evil, courage, and faraway worlds that sometimes felt very close. So, yes, I’ll miss all that.
Thankfully, the author not only offers us a very satisfying closure (I won’t go into any details, don’t worry), but she also hints at things to come. As she explains in the description, these hints will help us all continue the adventures of our favourite characters in our imaginations, and we won’t be left so bereft.
As I don’t want to talk about the plot, or about the future that awaits the characters either, I will mention some of the things that I most enjoyed about this final journey.
Emlyn is the protagonist, as she should be, but despite her misgivings, she is not alone. It is great to see her be both, bold and timid, fearful and fearless, determined and full of self-doubt. Despite how far she has come, Emlyn is only twelve years old, and although she is not exactly the typical moody and unruly teenager, she still wants to do things her own way and act like a grown-up, while at the same time feeling that she is not good enough to do what is expected of her. But she is so generous that she forgets all her doubts when one of her friends is in danger, and... Well, I won’t share any specifics, but you probably know what I mean.
I enjoyed the fact that many of the characters we have met throughout these journeys make an appearance, and some of the questions that we’ve been thinking about and also a few matters pending are revisited and solved. We get to see more of the goddesses and their particular sense of justice and morality, and I chuckled at some of the tricks they play on each other (and smiled at some of the synergies and connections between goddesses and humans).
There are action scenes aplenty, there are wonderful settings, and marvellous events, there are surprising discoveries as well, and rather than an ending, this feels like the beginning of a much longer journey, for Emlyn, her friends, and allies.
If you have read the rest of the series, don’t delay and read this one. I understand your possible reluctance, but it will leave you with a happy smile on your face. And if you haven’t, remember to read it in the right order. If you are starting the journey now, I envy you a bit. But, it has been an unforgettable reading experience, and I’m sure the characters will remain with me. Congratulations to the author, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future, in whichever genre she chooses.

Robbie CheadleBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 1 januari 20235,0 van 5 sterren A fantastic and satisfying ending
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopThis last journey was an excellent conclusion to the Dead of Winter fantasy epic. Emlyn comes into her own and exhibits great strength of mind and character, however, she makes a few minor judgement errors and demonstrates doubts and anxieties which made her role and character realistic and relatable.
I enjoyed seeing Gethin, the horse whisperer, stepping out of his supporting role and taking a bigger piece of the action, along with long-time favourite characters Lucetius, Hallgeir, and Tajin. It felt fitting that they took centre stage for a part of this final chapter.
I don't want to say too much about the final plot twisters other than they are exciting, unexpected, and momentous, a truly fitting Grande finale to an incredible story. I am left feeling quite saddened that I have reach the end of the series despite the conclusion being perfect and satisfying which is rare in my experience of fantasy books which often seem to disappoint with their endings.
I cannot resist ending my reviews of this series with a final example of the authors incredibly descriptive writing:
"The rancid odor was heavy in the air. It was a stench similar to rendered port fat that had gone bad. The odor emanated from a dozen puddles of fatty goo that dotted the ground. Nothing else was left of the nest of nightwalkers that attacked the men. Gethin was thankful for the light breeze that carried some of the vile small away."

Priscilla BettisBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 8 juli 20225,0 van 5 sterren A satisfying ending to Emlyn's journey
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI am always amazed at Geneviene’s creativity in her stories, and I’ve remarked on particular settings or beings in each of the Journeys in Dead of Winter. Journey 14, the final installment, is no exception. When Emlyn explores the summer palace and then lands in the sands of Mizraim, I thought, “How does the author come up with this stuff?” It's a joy to read.
If “summer palace” and “Mizraim” sound familiar, they are. Geneviene uses names around the world from history and mythology. Summer Palace-Beijing, Mizraim-Egypt, Arawn-Welsh (and an added meaning to Winter is Coming), etc. They hadn’t been as prominent before (or rather, I hadn’t noticed the settings and characters’ global names as much as I did in this Journey).
As far as the plot goes, this episode wraps up loose ends and sets the (surviving) characters on their new courses. I especially loved to see the glimpse of Emlyn’s future. She’s young, but she’s no longer the naive, oppressed child that she was in the first Journey.
A satisfying ending to an epic journey.

P. WightBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 18 juli 20225,0 van 5 sterren The Incredible Journey Ends, but Really, Does It?
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopTeagan Riordain Geneviene's last journey, THE VEIL, was another fantastic reading dive into the depth of a world and land seemingly so different from ours, and yet so frighteningly similar. I wouldn't call this a dystopian series, because there's so much light in many of the characters. Fantasy? Yes, but also (light) romance, mystery, violence, and insight into the human (and inhuman) psyche, of gods and goddesses, of spiritual angels and horrendous devils. Interspersed with this is constant action and adventure. I have enjoyed this series SO much and read Journey 14 as slowly as possible, which wasn't really possible since it's a page turner. May the author be persuaded to continue Emlyn's story with her friends - heavenly and grounded. We, her faithful readers, are waiting!

D.L. FinnBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 20 juni 20225,0 van 5 sterren I couldn't put this down!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopI have been eagerly awaiting the conclusion of this fantastic journey. The first chapter not only pulled me in but offered a reminder of where this all started. I couldn’t put “The Veil” down and read it in one sitting to find out how it was concluded. I wasn’t disappointed either, but that’s all I’ll say since I don’t want to give anything away. There were a few surprises and some issues that I would have liked to have been solved differently but it needed to be the way it was written. This says a lot that I was wholly invested in the story and the outcome. As always, the settings pulled me in, and the good and evil characters kept me turning the pages. Emlyn found her place in a world that was in turmoil and I loved her continued growth. I’m glad there is the possibility of more to come, but still, the journey was resolved. I can highly recommend this journey, but suggest you start at the beginning.
