From Blake Crouch, the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a New York Times bestselling tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human - a relentlessly surprising thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we'll go to claim the lives we dream of.

'Are you happy in your life?'

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he wakes to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before the man he's never met smiles down at him and says, 'Welcome back, my friend.'

In this world he's woken up to, Jason's life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that's the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could've imagined - one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

5.0 van 5 sterren Is love the magnet always pointing north in your life, when you get a chance at the infinite possibilities of the multiverse? 12 januari 2017

A middle age physics professor teaching in a second rate college to undergrad students - former science genius who made a choice to marry, in his late twenties - all set for a brilliant and promising research career - his then girlfriend - an ascending plastic artist near public recognition - pregnant to their now 14 yrs old son - gets a second chance at a path not taken, in a world not his, without completely surrendering his identity.

This sets the stage for a reflection on paths not taken, things left behind, branching parallel universes to every choice we ever made, of what it means to belong, of what it means to be ourselves - challenging the uniqueness of our lives and identities we think we own in total and absolute singularity - of what constitutes the very core of our identities, of what we choose to be and do when we get a chance at the multiverse with its infinite possibilities.

Along the way we get overarching bits of quantum states, superpositions, black matter, pluripotencial worlds, the paths taken that decohere the quantum equilibrium, Schrödinger's cat paradigm, subconscience loads that determine our choices, free will, attachment patterns, love...

All tucked in a lot of action and suspense in a tight striped down prose that gets you totally addicted to the narrative. A truly page turned. Very much recommend it.

Best book I've read in a long long time. Responded to a mention on Paul Sheer's (The League) Instagram and it was such a solid review that now I will trust him with my life. I think this book should be part of high school curriculum-- incredible opportunity to teach quantum physics as well as writing & philosophy/ethics/you name it. (And it drove me to read Crouch's Wayward Pines trilogy, which is incredible.)

It started good, but then it got ridiculous and stupid and I sure hated the ending. Quantum mechanics is an interesting topic, and I enjoyed the possibilities, but in the end it all fell flat. Infinite possibilities does not make for good reading.

Quick read. Nothing extraordinary. One trick pony of a story.

4.0 van 5 sterren Well done. Good story 25 januari 2017

I really enjoyed it. A lot of surprises and suspence and discretely written. The story setup is interesting and make you think.
There is just a thing about physics in the main idea that I think it is not correct, but it is a minor one and does not compromise the good reading.
