Bridge to Nowhere: A Rascal Todd Mystery (English Edition) Kindle-editie
Is a crime solved when the criminals are identified, or only after they are brought to justice? This is a mystery born from that question. The story includes many twists and turns, even after one crime is solved. It features characters, including the bad guys, who grow in ways that might surprise you—in fact, you may come to like some of the bad guys. The book includes well-researched circumstances that will take you from delight to frustration while moving you close to the edge of your seat—sound interesting? If it does, this book is for you.
Pittsburgh reporter Rachael Todd has a hard deadline—and it’s personal. Her friend is a murder suspect. He knew the victim. The police attribute a strong motive to him, and he has a very weak alibi. Worse yet, even the news that he is a suspect can ruin his chances to emerge from a depression that caused him to commit suicide and settle into his new career. Rachael believes him when he says he is being framed, but she’ll have to live up to her nickname “Rascal” to clear him.
Rascal sees a connection the crime story that opened the book. The clock is ticking as she digs through multiple layers of legal and bureaucratic misdeeds, crimes, and evidence the police ignored. She has to wade through potential suspects in a connect-the-dots exercise that helps her to solve the crime. The question remains, will she solve it in time.
In the printed version of these books, I make use of a variety of symbolic typefaces, indentation and visual separators. The Virtual Voice translates most of these into pauses of various lengths. The most prominent reason for these transitions is to indicate when the character is lost in thought or processing information “behind the scenes.” I've listened to the audio book, and I think the Virtual Voice does a pretty good job of handling these sections.

Robbie CheadleBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 1 maart 20255,0 van 5 sterren An exciting plot with an engaging main character
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopBridge to Nowhere is a fast paced and exciting murder mystery which I thoroughly enjoyed. Rachel Todd, know as Rascal, is a new reporter for a small newspaper in Pittsburgh. She is an excellent investigative reporter but is anxious about her position as the 'new girl' in the team. Despite all her anxiety, Rascal has the support of her very experienced editor, Bernie, who is always on hand to provide guidance and insight, as well as the other members of the reporting team.
The story has a lot of action with plenty of intriguing twists and turns as well as an enjoyable character development aspect as Rascal settles into her new role, growing in confidence, and also engages more fully in her romance with bar tender, Terry. There are some references to Rascal and Terry's backstory which is detailed in another book, but I was able to pick up the threads despite not having read that particular book as yet. Rascal's cat, Bonkers, is a lovely touch and adds a great mood lightening aspect to the story as it becomes more intense during the unravelling of the plot lines. There are also references to Special Agent Slocum who I recognised from this author's previous series although it is not necessary to have read that series to enjoy this standalone novel.
This is a book with which the reader must fully engage throughout as there are a lot of different characters and a lot of plot developments and twists. You need to pay attention and stay with the flow of the story. I enjoyed that aspect as I enjoy a good reading challenge with lots of interest factors.

Pete SpringerBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 12 oktober 20244,0 van 5 sterren Series Potential with a Likable Protagonist
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopRachael "Rascal" Todd, a recently hired investigative reporter at a Pittsburgh newspaper, finds herself in the middle of two stories as separate crimes of arson and murder overlap. Digging into these cases is dangerous and leads to putting herself in danger. Still, she has a job to do and a friend who is a prime suspect. As a new reporter, she also wants to prove herself while also not stepping on the toes of other people working there.
Rascal is a likable character with a zest for getting to the truth and a sense of adventure. In many ways, Rascal is a normal young woman with a boyfriend and comical cat named Bonkers. Not only is it important to get her stories accurate, but there is a competitve nature with other media sources to get the news out faster than everyone else. The newspaper employees, led buy their boss Bernie, make up a team rather than just a bunch of individuals. The camaraderie between coworkers make it seem like their newspaper would be a fun place to work.
It's clear that author Dan Antion is familiar with Pittsburgh from many of the area references he includes. While I enjoyed the mystery, there are unnecessary details within the story that don't advance the plot. There is series potential with Rascal Todd.

D.L. FinnBeoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 3 september 20244,0 van 5 sterren Great start to a new series!
Formaat: Kindle-editieGeverifieerde aankoopRascal is a young journalist settling into her new job and boss. A building burns and she tries to prove it was arson. This leads to an eventual murder and a mystery for Rascal to solve and report. I enjoyed her enthusiasm for finding the truth. She is a strong character with an entertaining cat, Bonkers, who is focused on being fed. There are crossover characters from The Dreamer’s Alliance Series, which I also enjoyed reading. This book has a strong and vivid setting for Rascal to navigate, and although it isn’t necessary to have read the past stories to understand this one, I did like knowing the history. An exciting start to what promises to be a fun series!
