This collection of interviews with iconic Brazilian musicians is the first of its kind in the English language. Author Chris McGowan has written about Brazilian music for "Billboard" magazine, "The Huffington Post," and his own "The Brazilian Sound" blog, and co-authored the definitive introduction to the subject—"The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova and the Popular Music of Brazil." Along the way, he has spoken with many of the most important and influential legends of Brazilian music. In this new omnibus volume, McGowan presents many of these interviews in complete and unabridged form for the first time. There are profiles of and/or conversations with iconic figures of bossa nova, Tropicália, MPB, and Brazilian jazz, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Laurindo Almeida, Sergio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, Antonio Adolfo, Airto Moreira, Ivan Lins, Djavan, João Bosco, Dori Caymmi, Gilberto Gil, Ricardo Silveira, Cristina Braga, Gal Costa, Luciana Souza and Lenine. Most of the twenty interviews are presented in Q&A form, preceded by a profile and followed by an extensive discography. Quotes from shorter talks are incorporated into the profiles. "The Brazilian Music Book," which was updated in 2016, is an indispensable companion volume to the author's "The Brazilian Sound" (now in its third edition).

This is one of the best music related books I have read . Chris McGowan is extremely knowledgeable and asks the right questions in the interviews. The artists are very erudite and provide a lot of valuable insights into the evolution of Brazilian music. The book is well organized with thorough and relevant biographies and discographies. A great book for musicians and fans!

There's so much great music that has come out of Brazil, but the people behind it aren't as well-known as their music. This book takes care of that, with luminaries from Tom Jobim to Milton Nascimento to more recent artists such as Luciana Souza and Lenine telling the story of their journeys through Brazilian music in their own words. In a soundbite era, it's a pleasure to read interviews rich in detail and spirited conversation. I really enjoyed getting to know the personalities, influences, and fateful events that led to some of world's most tasty popular music. The expansive interview with Jobim and his insights on bossa nova and songwriting are worth the price of the book alone. A must for any Brazilian music fan.
