Productbeschrijving

Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she's an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she's betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn't even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?

3.0 van 5 sterren It was just okay for me... 23 augustus 2014
door Pam - Gepubliceerd op Amazon.com

Let me start with the things I liked:

1) The story itself was interesting, and specifically the prologue set me up for an all-nighter! A girl who has immense power and the last of her kind, wicked queen, promise of a love story, great reviews... I'm sold!!
2) I really liked Aiden, he was manly yet sensitive, but most importantly his emotions felt real. I wasn't reading his moments of sensitivity and thinking how completely cliched and cheesy they were, I believed him!
3) I liked Bethany, Amelia's best friend! I am from the south myself and laughed at quite a few phrases and personality quirks of hers that I could relate to. Mostly, she is a genuine friend and it comes across very well in the writing.

Spoiler Alert!! (I don't think anything big, but just heads up) Things I didn't like or that just started to irritate me:

1). I felt like the book dragged quite a bit in the middle. I did, however, stay up reading all night so it is possible I was just tired. The thing is... The beginning really set the book up for me and then I felt like we kept repeating pretty much the same scenario over and over until the end. Amelia flirts with Aiden and leads him on, then decides she can't be with him because she is betrothed to someone else, Amelia gets lied to by...pretty much everyone, Amelia cries and gets depressed or attacked...repeat. Yes there were a few things that happened in between but that was pretty much the gist. I was able to skim through multiple pages without missing anything interesting, and at the end I felt like we didn't really find out much that we didn't learn in the first few pages.
2) I started off really really liking Amelia, but by the end her sarcasm, crying, and indecision was getting on my last nerve. Make a choice and stick with it!! She kept saying how she hated lying and moping about it, but that didn't stop her from doing it when she felt it necessary. That's the thing... I get it, you don't want to lie but you have to, so come to grips with it and move on! I don't mean to sound mean, but the phrase "get your big girl panties on" came to mind. She was just a wreck for most of the book.
3) There is a big spoiler about Aiden and I won't say what it specifically is... But I will say it was poorly set up. It came out of nowhere and made me feel like the author was trying to wrap the book up and just threw that in there for a little spice. If you read the book, and you read really often, you are going to know exactly what I'm talking about.
4) The ending felt a bit rushed and sort of slapped together. I don't want to give big spoilers so I will leave it at that.

So after all that... Would I recommend the book? Sure, it wasn't awful by any means, it just wasn't everything I hoped it would be from all the raving reviews and the great beginning. I would say read it with hopes that it will keep your attention and you will find it interesting, but not the most amazing start to a series you have ever read. Will I read the next book? Yes, I will, in hopes that we learn more and Amelia gets the chance to grow into the women she is meant to be!

3.0 van 5 sterren Good descriptions but slow plot 10 februari 2017

I still haven't gotten to the ending of this book, which is an abnormal thing for me. I can read a captivating book in a day. The description seems interesting, but the pick up is still pretty slow. The main character is totally lost and in the dark about herself, her powers, and the people around her for a giant portion of the book. I hope it picks up, but after everyone she is around keeping secrets it can get a little dragging within the plot. The language and descriptions are great and I do feel apart of the story, but I just feel so bad for the character that I can't make myself read more about the people that supposedly love her continue to lie to her.

Good premise that sounded promising but lacks substance. Okay for a free book, forgettable plot and characters, recommend for teens.

The story had promise and could have really taken off. There's lots to work with and places to go but the characters are not built up with any substance so you don't connect with them. The love story is handed on a platter - can't stand the guy then suddenly bam, can't be without them. There's no build up to anything solid between them. The relationships between even brother and sister, friend's boyfriend, parent, others are not developed. There is a little more given between the main character and her friend but again, it drops the ball.

Plot - could see the twists coming pretty soon in the back so not a lot of surprises. Some things are simply never really explained, the reader just has to go with it, like the turn from her friend's boyfriend giving her bad vibes to being someone they rely on. There's a lot of empty nothing - I could read a sentence on a page and skip it (this happened for about a third of the book).

This story could be re-done and be a great one. Make the dialogue and relationships realistic. Make Amelia less annoying and more of a sound thinker, a smart girl, someone who really has some character rather than a whiny person who can't learn from her mistakes, and spend some actual time growing her character - let her regret and work through the regrets of mistakes, have her relationship actually develop, give us more background on her childhood and with her brother, etc. Cut this book down by half and put the next in the series as the other half and this would have possibilities.

If you liked Twilight, you "might" like this. I was not a fan of Twilight but at least the action scenes came alive and made more sense, and she created another world that you could glimpse into. When I came to write this review after not even 2 days ago finishing the book, truth to tell I had to read the synopsis before I could actually REMEMBER what it was about - the book is very forgettable and the characters don't stay with you. I will not be reading the next book - and it leaves the end as a cliffhanger, without at least wrapping it up as an independent book.
5.0 van 5 sterren a best friend, reconnecting with a brother she hadn't seen ... 17 juli 2017

This is one of those books that's going to grab you from the prologue and not let you go. I finished this book about an hour ago and I still can't get it out of my mind. I'm just dying to read the next book (which I do not have handy unfortunately!)

We start with a prologue that gives us a hint into the past that the main character spends most of the book trying to figure out. Once into the main chapters, we meet the main character Amelia and follow her as she navigates college, a best friend, reconnecting with a brother she hadn't seen in about 8 years, a blooming romance of sorts, and her magical powers! What a lot for one girl to deal with right? But that's not all, most of her life she's been lied to about certain things and those things are just now coming to light. She must take all these things she's learning and decide what to do about it all, what she wants, or what people seem to need her to do.

You're sure to get caught up in this side world of magic and powers and a tyrant queen who needs to be overthrown. I couldn't read fast enough, and at the same time, didn't want the story to end. If you enjoy YA Romance, especially that of the paranormal nature, you'll definitely enjoy this book. If you enjoy a good coming of age story, you'll also enjoy this book. If you love to read about witches or magical beings at all, you're gonna want to read this book.

A special thanks and shout out to the librarian, Kayla, from my local library for recommending this book to me!

3.0 van 5 sterren Lots of promise but fell a little flat for me 3 januari 2017

Bound by Duty is an entertaining YA paranormal book. This book had a lot of promise with a unique plot that grabbed my attention. The pace of the book overall was not bad, however it did drag out a little bit in the middle. On the other hand at the hand there were some serious reveals and twists, however they were very sudden and could have used a little more elaboration.

Aidan was an adorable character and probably my favorite one. He felt as real as a fictional character can be and didn't play around. Bethany was also a great addition to the characters, true to who she is and does all she can to help the ones she loves. She also had a "real" feel to her. Amelia on the other hand was tough for me to related to. She was constantly up and down, complains about one thing one second and does the same thing to someone else the next. I understand she is going through a lot, but a little bit more level headedness would have been nice.

Overall not a bad book, interesting but could use a little smoothing of the edges. I will probably pick up the next 2 books in the future to find out if Amelia gets her act together.
