One stupid party. One stupid boy. One stupid kiss. And my life was virtually over.

Tessa McCaide has a unique talent for getting into trouble. Then again, it isn’t easy for a girl with psychic visions to ignore what she sees. Luckily Tessa and her family are leaving California and moving halfway across the country, giving her the perfect opportunity to leave her reputation as “Freaky Tessa” behind.

But Tessa doesn’t realize that kissing the wrong guy in her new Texas town could land her in far more trouble than she ever imagined. Like being forced to attend St. Ailbe’s Academy, a secret boarding school for werewolves.

Even if the wrong guy did accidentally turn her into a shapeshifter and doom her to attending the weirdest high school ever, Tessa can’t help her growing attraction to the mysterious Dastien Laurent.

When vampires attack St. Ailbe’s and her visions pinpoint an enemy in their midst, Tessa realizes that boy drama and her newfound canine tendencies might just be the least of her problems.

Eehhh I am a bit torn on this book. The writing was ok despite a few strangely worded sentences. I found that a few things contradicted each other and it bothered me. The heroine apparently never had friends yet she was completely outspoken and snarky whenever she opened her mouth. This was completely the opposite of the shy introverted girl the author leads you to believe. Tessa says that the werewolf school was full of people from all over the world yet besides two known Irish characters everyone had a Spanish last name or spoke in Spanish often. The group did not seem to be as diverse as the author claimed. The connection between Tessa and Dastien was nonexistent to me. Whenever they weren't running away from each other they were awkward to me. I am usually the type of person who needs to see a series through however I was so irritated by Tessa that I just wanted the book to be over. I don't think I will purchase the next book and I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone over 16

Normally, I don’t really pay attention to Young Adult novels. Hey, I have been a young adult – didn’t like it back then, don’t really want to read about the angst, you feel me? But the fourth or fifth time it caught my attention, and having an evening which really called for something light, I went ahead and picked it up.

Huh. The heroine is 17, and a touch telepath, which is interesting to me. Can you imagine touching some boy in your high school and knowing everything he is thinking about? Actually seeing what is on his grubby little hormone-crazed mind? Euuu. Just. EUUU!!!! Gross. And yes, I sound like a high schooler!

Anyway. The good part is the heroine. She has her stuff together. She has been switched from school to school as the bullies and weirdos glory in someone even weirder than them. Being different amongst one’s peers is pretty much like being chum thrown in amongst the sharks. But I liked her. Life is tough, but she handles it, though it hurts.

After being ‘outed’ at yet another school, and left with pretty much no place to turn, her famous father/attorney to the stars in Hollywood is moving them to Texas. Texas?!?????! Well, at least there won’t be as many people around to touch, right? But things are not all what they seem at the new school her father will be working for. And before Tess knows it, her life takes a hard left and roars off into a new, and even more painful direction. Like Really. REALLY. Painful.

The storyline is good. The characters are interesting. Overall, it should have been a pleasant evening read. But then, the whole thing goes off the tracks. Why WHY do authors not invest in Editors?!?! Come ON PEOPLE!!! Most of the book was well done, editorially, but then the whole train ran off the tracks and plot holes you could drive a freight train through reached up and slapped me in the face, ripping through Discontinuity Land with no brakes. Totally ruined the whole thing for me. Ugh. I was right there on the whole “recommended for people who get a kick out of paranormal for the YA audience”. Now? Not so much. Sigh.

If you aren’t upset by discontinuity issues, the book is OK for its audience. Otherwise, I would give it a pass. And I hate that. It had such potential!

Alright, so this girl, Tessa, has had visions all her life. (She got it from her mom's side of the family.) She has to up and move to a new town since her dad got a job working with a special school. After the move, she sees this guy she seems to have some kind of attraction to, and she keeps seeing him. Everywhere. In her first week, she gets invited to a party, and like a dummy seeking popularity, she goes. Guess who's there? (If you count showing up in the backyard barefoot "there.") The guy, Destian. Sexy, chunky, ripped Destian. And he bites her, and everything goes downhill. She transfers to St. Alice's, the special school for werewolves.

The more she learns, the crazier it all is. It all unfolds in a mesmerizing way that just flows, clicks, makes sense.

Why three stars, then if I like it so much?

·It's never clear what her dad specializes in... Before the move, he worked with celebrities, so what career transfers from celebrities to a school of werewolves?

·They had a going away party, and he insisted his family, including Tess, make an appearance. Having Tessa there doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Because of Tessa's "gift" she is a social pariah by choice. Less chance of visions for her. He and her mom get her down, but then worry when she starts visioning out. It was odd.

·The entire story was good and entertaining, but the ending could have been MORE. The ending was... not really flat, but deflated. Immogen? Her father? The vampires? It doesn't explain anything that happened, aside from Immogen's vote/apology.

· The emotions are constant, no change in jealousy or anger, even before her life changed. It was all a little emo....

· There weren't any explanations, and most explanations weren't even sought after. For instance, someone started in on mating, and she shuts it all down, refuses to listen, and gets angry when the bond ropes her in with jealousy.

The best way I can summarize the faults: Think Harry Potter, but instead of Harry learning about the Chamber of secrets, Giny was taken there by a jealous boyfriend's family, and he instinctively ran without knowing anything about the basalisk with several friends, and all Harry had to do was throw fireballs and leave with the friends right behind him. They all confront the jealous boyfriend's family, it all happens behind scene, the end.

I really liked Becoming Alpha! In some ways, it's a pretty typical YA paranormal, but in other ways it felt totally fresh. Either way, it was a lot of fun, because Tessa isn't one to just sit back and let others run her. Her family has just moved from LA to Texas due to her father's job. Tessa is dreading the move, but also looking forward to being somewhere new where she isn't known as a freak. She's a psychometric, so whatever she touches gives her flashes of that objects past. She also sometimes gets visions from skin-to-skin contact, so she's careful to not touch anyone and wears gloves. Well, the new Tessa still doesn't fit in, since she gets bitten by a werewolf her first weekend, and has to transfer to the special school.

It's no secret that I adore special school settings, and Becoming Alpha did not disappoint in that regard! The school actually seems pretty normal, except that all of the students and faculty are werewolves. They still have normal classes, but mixed in with things like Metaphysics and Yoga. Tessa's transition wasn't so smooth though, since she knows literally nothing about werewolves. I mean, they did give her The Werewolf Bible, but too many people have touched it for her to actually read it. Plus there's this matter of being mated.

Of course, there's a romance, but it's not too huge of a part of Becoming Alpha. Well, the romance is kind of the reason Tessa was bitten and the cause of some of her problems at the new school. Dastien bit her because of reasons! He's super hot, but kind of moody, but that's his wolf. I was actually worried about the romance in the beginning, but there are reasons. And Tessa doesn't just automatically accept those reasons, and Dastien doesn't push her. They actually spend some time together, have common interests, and no one is proclaiming undying love. It's pretty great actually.

I also really liked the plot. Becoming Alpha isn't just about werewolves. Tessa's powers come about because she's half-witch. Then there's also vampires, who are the bad guys! In fact, some come to attack the school, even though it's well hidden, because there's a traitor at the school! Obviously, Tessa has to use her abilities and her fresh perspective to solve the case and save the day. It was still exciting though, since even though we know who's behind it, there's still the matter of rescuing everybody and fighting off the undead!

Becoming Alpha was just a fun read. I loved the combination of supernaturals, and I really liked Tessa. Sure she complains a lot, but her whole life was just uprooted and she's having to learn a whole new culture that she's been thrust into. She questions everything and fights for her rights, and all that good stuff.
