Paul Phipps-Williams trained to be a film producer, wandering around student films shouting 'Time is Money' at people before stealing their cake. Having figured out that isn't the most successful way of getting hired, he went on to sell pencils and pints for a living because people always seemed to need one or the other. For the last eighteen years, Paul has told people he works for the Government in the hope they'll think him a super-spy. He isn't, but that's what you'd expect a super-spy to say. He's passed at least a couple of new laws, convinced one government minister to quote the Spice Girls in the House of Commons and spent London 2012 in an underground bunker. On at least one occasion he's had tens of thousands of people march through central London protesting against what he's doing with his life. Whether this was work related or not, we'll leave to your imagination. When he's not Making The World A Better Place / Contributing To The Fall of Society (delete according to your political affiliations) Paul is also a photographer and can be regularly found at Cult TV events telling people to smile as they stand nervously next to their childhood heroes. His motto is 'what happens in Paul's photo studio, stays in Paul's photo studio'. At least, that's what Paul's been told by his lawyers. His photographs have been published in an eclectic range of magazines, from The Amorist to Scottish Field and Doctor Who Magazine. The Axe & Grindstone is Paul's first novel, and he's had to convince his mother that its main character isn't really based on him. She's not entirely convinced. He lives on a roundabout in Lewisham with his husband, Gareth, and their two cats Billy and Hartnell. His favourite pizza is an abomination of hot and spicy things with BBQ sauce and his favourite colour is TARDIS Blue (1987-1989).

The genius of this book is in the security it offers before our world is turned on its head. We follow main character Mark as he loses everything he knows, to a pub in the middle of nowhere, and from the start each setting is familiar, each character someone we know. I wish we could have lingered in that country pub, but the security is not to last as he discovers an entirely different world close by, a world that is not quite as safe and familiar, and that is where the tension begins and things get an awful lot more terrifying.
This story would translate as a Doctor who storyline, and that tells you what you need to know about the author. The story is comfortable yet creepy, and left me wanting more. In fact if there was a theme pub based on this book, I would be the first at the bar beyond the cellar, ordering a cherry brandy.

Occasionally you stumble across an author you had never previously heard of and just take a bit of a punt because you like the cover. Normally, this is not a great way to find Your New Favourite Author because, well, the old adage "never judge a book by it's cover" is actually pretty accurate.

Thankfully for me, I never listen to any good advice what-so-ever and, on this rare occasion, it paid off.

When I read, I tend to visualise the characters within a book and, in this case, I am imagining a whole world which is akin to a Terry Pratchett show cast by Hot Fuzz.

It's funny. It's fantastical. It's horrortastic. It's un-put-downable.

Read it.

Who hasn’t found themselves stuck in a rut on occasion, in need of a change of career or scenery?

Enter Mark Adams.

A man who finds himself, reluctantly, getting both in this well written and tense fantasy thriller which hurls the main character (and the reader) out of his comfort zone into rapidly realising his importance in the new world(s) he finds himself in.

The story unfolds quickly, punctuated by a scattering of intriguingly cryptic flashbacks and cutaways which give the reader tantalising glimpses into the characters lives before these events and builds the tension by hinting at what is happening in the sidelines.

The characters, human and otherwise, are well realised and vividly described. Whilst you may think you have them figured out, there are plenty of twists and developments to keep the reader guessing as to who can really be trusted.

And of course there is the genuinely chilling - Man with The Crab-Like Feet, who’s eerie ”Tap. Te-tap-te-tap” is the stuff of nightmares, the scratching and the screaming....

If you like you fantasy on the darker and sinister side but with a humorous and human warmth, this is definitely the book for you!
